Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as manager on a two-and-a-half year contract until June 2027.
Amorim’s appointment comes five days after Erik Ten Hag was sacked following a poor start to the season, which left Utd sat 14th in the Premier League and winless in the UEFA Europa League’s new league phase format.
Utd issued a statement confirming Amorim’s appointment in which they added that there is a club option to extend his contract for a further year until June 2028, having held successful talks with Sporting Lisbon over his release.
‘He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
‘Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.’
Ruud van Nistelrooy meanwhile will stay in interim charge for Utd’s league clashes against Chelsea and Leicester on 3 and 10 November respectively, sandwiched by an Europa League home game against Greece’s PAOK.
The Portuguese was previously linked with Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp announced his exit, but the Reds opted for Arne Slot instead in a successful move for the Merseyside club.
