Chelsea have signed winger, Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m.
Rogers had been linked with Arsenal throughout his involvement with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup until Chelsea produced an unexpected £117m offer minus add-ons, which the Gunners weren’t prepared to match and left Villa to accept the Blues’ offer.
Middlesbrough also benefitted from the sale due to a sell-on clause when they sold Rogers to Villa in February 2024, which has seen him go on to produce 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances for Unai Emery’s Villains and was part of their UEFA Europa League title-winning squad last season.
Rogers subsequently signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge until June 2032, with an option to extend for a further year until June 2033 if his move proves successful.
“I’m so excited,’ commented Rogers on his move. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Rogers added that he can’t wait to play under Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso with belief that his style suits his game
“I’ve had a few conversations with him and I think it’s important for me to be here that I need to understand what the manager’s like, how he is and how he wants to operate,” continued Rogers.
“It very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself. Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here.”
Rogers began his career at West Brom where he broke through into the senior team with just one appearance in a 3-1 FA Cup Fourth Round replay loss at home to Brighton in February 2019, before he moved to Manchester City.
He however failed to break through into City’s first team amidst loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool, before he moved to Middlesbrough in July 2023 where he scored seven goals in 33 appearances to earn a move to Villa just under eight months later.
Rogers represents England at international level since his senior debut in November 2024 as a substitute in a 3-0 UEFA Nations League B victory away to Greece, and has gone on to score one goal in 22 total appearances – of which his first senior international goal came in October 2025 in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales.
He also was part of England’s squad at this summer’s World Cup in which he created one assist in seven appearances, which saw him set up Anthony Gordon’s opening goal with a cross in their eventual 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina, although the Three Lions finished third with a dramatic 6-4 Third-Place Play-Off win over France.
