Manchester United have sacked Erik Ten Hag as manager after a disastrous start to the 2024-25 season.
Utd’s 2-1 loss at West Ham yesterday (27 October) was the final straw for the club bosses, as the Red Devils were left 14th in the Premier League with 11 points in just nine games.
Under Ten Hag this season, Utd has also netted just eight league goals with only Crystal Palace and Southampton scoring fewer goals, and claimed just four wins in 14 games across all competitions.
Confirming the Dutchman’s departure, Utd issued the following statement.
‘Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
‘We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
‘Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.’
During his two full seasons at the club, Ten Hag led Utd to Carabao Cup then FA Cup titles, plus Quarter-Finals of 2022-23 UEFA Europa League where they lost to eventual champions, Sevilla.
Van Nistelrooy’s first match in interim charge sees Man Utd host Leicester on Wednesday 30 October in the Carabao Cup.
