2023-24 FA Cup: Third Round Roundup

Roundup of Third Round action in the 2023-24 FA Cup as Premier League and Championship clubs entered the mix.

Whilst Non League clubs like Maidstone United, Eastleigh and Aldershot dreamed of cupsets, several Premier League clubs dug deep to avoid crashing out in banana skin ties in a busy round full of surprises but lacking in giant slaying results.

Now, here is a roundup of all 32 ties across the Third Round of 2023-24 FA Cup.

 

Non League vs EFL

Sam Corne’s penalty in the second minute of first-half injury-time fired sixth-tier’s Maidstone United to a shock home win over League One’s Stevenage.

Christopher Maguire’s 82nd minute penalty cancelled out James Clarke’s strike as ten-men Eastleigh came from behind to draw at League Two’s Newport County, despite George Langston’s red card in the 38th minute.

Newport however went on to win the replay 3-1 through second-half goals from James Clarke and Will Evans, having initially led through Aaron Wildig only for Paul McCallum’s volley to pull Eastleigh level in the 48th minute.

Late goals from Mileta Rajovic and Tom Dele-Bashiru saw Watford come from behind to avoid a cupset at home to National League’s Chesterfield, who had led through Joe Quigley’s header.

Aldershot’s FA Cup run ended with a 4-1 loss at West Brom despite Ollie Bray’s late consolatory goal, after Nathaniel Chalobah, Jovan Malcolm, Daryl Dike and Tom Fellows scored for the Baggies.

 

Premier League vs EFL

Joao Pedro’s brace saw Brighton prevail 4-2 at Stoke, having initially fallen behind through Jan Paul Van Hecke’s own-goal only to come back and lead through goals from Pervis Estupinan and Lewis Dunk, prior to Lewis Baker’s equalising penalty for the Potters.

Dan Ballard’s own-goal and Alexander Isak’s brace saw Newcastle see off Sunderland 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in a dominant Tyne-Wear derby triumph.

Braces from William Osula and James McAtee saw Sheffield United avoid any prospect of a cupset away at Gillingham.

Justin Kluivert struck a 69th minute winner to seal Bournemouth’s comeback win at QPR, after Marcus Tavernier and Kieffer Moore cancelled out first-half goals from the Hoops’ Sinclair Armstrong and Lyndon Dykes.

Matty Cash netted a 87th minute winner as Premier League title challengers, Aston Villa narrowly avoided being taken to a replay by Middlesbrough following a tense battle at the Riverside Stadium.

Phil Foden scored twice as reigning champions, Manchester City thrashed Huddersfield 5-0, with Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku also on the scoresheet whilst the Terriers’ Ben Jackson netted into his own-goal.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s 24th minute strike proved enough for last season’s Quarter-Finalists, Fulham to edge past Rotherham at Craven Cottage.

Second-half goals from Armando Broja, Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Enzo Fernandez saw Chelsea cruise past Preston in a 4-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Nicolas Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs-White rescued Nottingham Forest a 2-2 draw at home to League One’s Blackpool, after ex Forest Academy graduate – Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel and Albie Morgan had put the Tangerines 2-0 up in the first half.

Forest eventually prevailed 3-2 in the replay through Chris Wood’s extra-time winner after Andrew Omobamidele and Danilo initially put them in front, before Morgan and Kyle Joseph netted in a late fightback for Blackpool in regulatory time.

Goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes saw Manchester United cruise past League One’s Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Tommy Conway’s 61st minute equaliser saw Bristol City snatch a 1-1 draw away at West Ham before he scored the replay winner at Ashton Gate, after Jarrod Bowen had initially fired the Hammers into a fourth minute lead at London Stadium.

Luton were held to a goalless draw by Bolton Wanderers in a scrappy contest at Kenilworth Road, but Rob Edwards’ Hatters came from behind to win their replay 2-1 courtsey of Chiedozie Ogbene after Tahith Chong cancelled out Dion Charles’ opening goal.

 

Premier League vs Premier League

Jakub Kiwior’s own-goal and Luis Diaz’s injury-time strike saw Liverpool defeat Arsenal in a blockbuster clash at Emirates Stadium, where Mikel Arteta’s Gunners had wasted chances throughout.

Tottenham survived a close contest at home as Pedro Porro struck a 78th minute winner to see off a resilient Burnley.

Tommy Doyle cancelled out Neal Maupay’s close-range strike to rescue Wolves a 1-1 draw at Brentford, after the visitors were reduced to ten men following Toti Gomes’ early red card but Gary O’Neil’s Old Gold won 3-2 from behind twice in the replay with Matheus Cunha’s extra-time winner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was red carded for a reckless tackle on Nathaniel Clyne as Everton battled to a goalless draw at Crystal Palace, before Andre Gomes’ free-kick saw Sean Dyche’s Toffees scrape victory in a tense replay.

 

EFL vs EFL

Ben Sheaf produced a goal and assist for Coventry in a dominant 6-2 home win over League One’s Oxford United, during which Matty Godden netted twice for the Championship hosts.

2020-21 champions, Leicester survived a huge cupset with a 3-2 win at Millwall through Tom Cannon’s 61st minute winner, after Cesare Casadei and Ricardo Pereira had put them into a half-time lead before Cannon netted either side of Duncan Watmore and Zian Flemming’s goals for the hosts.

Axel Tuanzebe’s header and Jack Taylor’s close-range effort saw Ipswich survive a cupset at ten-men AFC Wimbledon with a 3-1 win, after Josh Davison’s own-goal had put the Tractor Boys ahead before Jake Reeves levelled from the penalty spot prior to Harry Pell’s red card for the Dons.

Second-half goals from Charlie Patino and Jerry Yates secured a debut win for new Swansea manager – Luke Williams as the Swans edged past Morecambe.

Josh Windass, Liam Palmer and Mallik Wilks all netted for Sheffield Wednesday in a 4-0 home win over Cardiff, during which the Owls’ second goal came from Romaine Sawyers’ own goal.

Ryan Hardie’s penalty and Morgan Whittaker’s deflected strike saw Plymouth beat Sutton to win their first match under new manager – Ian Foster, after Luke Cundle’s opening goal had been cancelled out by Lee Angol.

Second half goals from Arnor Sigurdsson and Harry Leonrd saw Blackburn beat Cambridge United 5-2 at Ewood Park, after Sammie Szmodics’ first senior hat-trick saw Rovers come from behind to lead at half-time.

Ryan Fraser’s brace plus goals from Sekou Mara and Che Adams saw Southampton thrash League Two’s Walsall at St Mary’s Stadium.

Ethan Ampadu’s brace and Patrick Bamford’s wonder strike saw Leeds cruise to a 3-0 away win at Peterborough.

Tom O’Connor struck a 72nd minute winner as Wrexham won away to Shrewsbury in the Angelo-Welsh derby.

Grant Ward’s 17th minute curled strike saw League One’s Bristol Rovers earn a home replay after they snatched a 1-1 draw at Norwich, after David Wagner’s Canaries had led briefly through Ashley Barnes’ close-range finish.

Second-half goals from Gabriel Sara, Adam Idah and Kenny McLean eventually saw Norwich win 3-1 in the replay, after Luke McCormick had put Bristol Rovers into a half-time lead.

Matthew Jacob’s late equaliser saw Hull snatch a 1-1 draw at home and a replay against Birmingham City – who had led through Lukas Jutkiewicz’s 18th minute goal, although the Blues eventually prevailed 2-1 in the replay with second-half goals from Jay Stansfield and Koji Miyoshi.
