Newcastle United have signed forward, William Osula from Sheffield United for £15m.
Osula’s switch has ended his six-year tenure at Sheffield Utd in which he scored three goals in 24 senior appearances, with his three goals coming in last season’s FA Cup.
His first two goals came in a 4-0 away win against Gillingham in the Third Round, before he scored the equalising goal in the Blades’ eventual 5-2 loss at home to Brighton in the Third Round.
Osula’s promising performances however caught Newcastle’s eye and the Magpies saw a £15m bid accepted for the 20 year-old, consisting of a £10m initial fee then £5m in add-ons.
Speaking about his move to Tyneside on a long-term contract, Osula commented: “I’m very happy to be here. It’s a big club, a great club, so I’m very happy for the opportunity to join Newcastle United.
“It’s a great opportunity, and as soon as I heard about Newcastle’s interest, I knew I had to take the chance to join this club if it came.
“It has come, and I’m really happy to be here.”
Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe added: “William is a talented young forward with all the attributes to be an exciting player for Newcastle United.
“We have watched his development closely and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with him in this next step in his career.”
Sheffield Utd manager, Chris Wilder added that Newcastle marks “a fantastic opportunity” for Osula to progress his game, following internal discussions about allowing young players to maximise their potential.
“These situations are difficult and we have discussed it a number of times before, we are a club in a position that has to be careful that we don’t stifle opportunities for young players.
“Also, it is important that we get the best possible price – and protect ourselves in the future – for players that we help develop.”
Osula began his career within Copenhagen’s youth academy before he moved to Sheffield Utd in 2018, and has been capped at Under-19 and Under-21s levels for Denmark.
