Plymouth Argyle have appointed Ian Foster as their new manager.
Foster was most recently assistant-manager to Steven Gerrard at Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq, having previously worked for England where he managed at Under 18, 19 and 20s levels plus was assistant manager during Phil Neville’s spell in charge of the Lionesses.
During that period, Foster led England’s Under-19s to 2022 UEFA U19 Euros success in which they went through the tournament unbeaten, which eventually saw them beat Israel 3-1 in the final following extra-time.
Foster now has returned to club management with Plymouth, who have played their last four matches under Neil Dewslip following Steven Schumcher’s departure for Stoke.
Argyle Chairman, Simon Hallett is “thrilled” to appoint Foster as manager, as he described the manager as “the perfect candidate to lead our great football club forward as we embark on our next five-year mission.”
Hallett added: “Ian showed a passion and knowledge for the club throughout the interview process, and showcased in some detail how he sees the best way to take forward our exciting and dynamic young squad.
“Having worked with some of the best players this country has produced, he has a passion for developing young footballers, as well as playing expansive, attacking football which fits perfectly with how we want the club to progress.
“I am excited to see how he takes the team forward and very much welcome him to Plymouth Argyle.”
Foster’s first match as Plymouth manager will see the club host Sutton tomorrow (6 January) in the Third Round of 2023-24 FA Cup.
Foster previously began his managerial career with Ireland’s Galway United and Dandalk FC before he worked with Coventry’s Under 18 then 21s squads plus first-team, prior to taking up a First-Team Coach role at Portsmouth.
