Midfielder, JJ McKiernan feels that Bromley are on a “forward trajectory” following his move from Lincoln City.
McKiernan has joined from last season’s League One champions, Lincoln City and will now play a third consecutive season in the third tier, as he praised Bromley for their upward form of recent seasons in his first interview as a Raven.
“It was just the momentum of the club really. Um you can see the it’s a club on its way up. I know a lot about the gaffer anyway before I signed. Um and uh it’s just a club with a forward trajectory, so looking forward to playing and looking forward to being here.”
The 24-year-old added that he is “excited to get going” and has vowed to bring “energy” and “goals” to the team this season.
“Just just energy and just try and add some goals. Um, just try and just win games. That’s what I want to be, I want to be a part of a winning team. And you look at Bromley over the last three years, they’ve done nothing but win, so it’ll be good to be a part of it.”
McKiernan will be reunited with his former Watford Academy teammate, Kamil Conteh who joined earlier this month from Bristol Rovers, and he can’t wait to be in the same dressing room with Conteh again.
“I’ve known him for years. Um, played together obviously in the academy. Um, really good lad. I’m exited to be sharing the changing room with him again.”
Ashley Charles is another Watford midfield alumni at the club and McKiernan is keen to play alongside him too.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, be good. Um, be good to sort of link up again and be playing, so I’m looking forward to it.”
McKiernan previously visited Bromley when he was on loan at Eastleigh in the 2022-23 season in a game which the Ravens won 2-1 on their then Astroturf pitch, but he was impressed at the club’s progress since their meeting.
“Yeah, the club’s come on leaps and bounds considering the last time I played here. Um, I think it was astro when I played. And the stand on this side by where the dugouts are, I don’t think that was there before, so club’s come a long way, so it’s really good to see it’s got that momentum.
“So it’s really good to be on board.”
After spending the 2023-24 season at Morecambe, McKiernan joined Lincoln City in July 2024 but struggled to impress with one goal in 17 appearances, which led him to join Burton Albion from January 2025 in an eventual 18-month loan.
McKiernan though found himself involved in two relegation scraps with the Brewers which he felt gave him proper experience of League One.
“Yeah it was all right. It was all right.
“Um, it was sort of up and down for us as a team, so it was sort of we would be fighting down the bottom and then we’re going on a few good runs, but I spent 18 months at Burton and first six months was unbelievable.
“And then we had a really good year last year to stay up, so um, and I felt like we were never going to go down, we were going to stay up and it was really good, really good to play there.”
“Um and got the experience of playing in the league also, so um yeah.”
He is therefore now keen to bring that experience to Bromley and help the team fight for survival against top teams like Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday.
“I think playing in League One the last two seasons and racked up some games there, so it’ll be good. I sort of know league and I’m looking forward to playing in some massive stadiums for the teams that have come down, the Leicesters, the Sheffield Wednesdays, so yeah, I’m excited for the season ahead.”
McKiernan also addressed fans as he spoke of his desire to have a solid season but is tight-lipped on his own personal targets.
“Just can’t wait to get down playing and let’s have a really good season.”
“Uh got a few, but I’ll just take it one game at a time really. I’m just looking forward to the 14th of August or even the 8th August against Reading. Um look forward to that.”
