Roundup of a busy May Bank Holiday matchweek as the race for the Premier League’s top five continued to build.

Virgil van Dijk’s 85th-minute header couldn’t prevent newly-crowned champions, Liverpool stuttering to a 3-1 loss at Chelsea, in which Enzo Fernandez’s effort and Jarell Quansah’s own-goal put the Blues in control before Cole Palmer capped the Blues’ victory with an injury-time penalty.

Arsenal’s hopes of moving onto the cusp of sealing Champions League qualification were dealt a blow with a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, having led through Declan Rice before Dean Huijsen and Evanilson’s second-half goals saw the Cherries come from behind to claim their first league double over the Gunners.

Kevin De Bruyne netted a 35th-minute winner as Manchester City climbed to third with a 1-0 win at home over Wolves in Friday Night Football, which ended the Old Gold’s six-match winning run.

Alexander Isak’s late penalty saw Newcastle sit in fourth – and only just above Chelsea on virtue of goals scored – as Eddie Howe’s Magpies snatched a 1-1 comeback draw at Brighton, after ex Magpie – Yankuba Minteh put the Seagulls in front against his former team.

Murillo cancelled out Eberechi Eze’s penalty as Nottingham Forest battled back to a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, which kept the Tricky Trees’ top-five dreams within touching distance.

Youri Tielemans’ 12th-minute header proved enough for Aston Villa to snatch a 1-0 home win over Fulham and stay within sight of the top five.

Down in the relegation zone, Southampton remained rock bottom after they suffered a 2-0 loss at second-bottom Leicester through first-half goals from Jamie Vardy and Jordan Ayew.

Comeback goals from Julio Enciso and George Hirst rescued third-bottom Ipswich a 2-2 draw at Everton, with the Toffees having initially led through goals from Beto and Dwight McNeil.

Elsewhere, Kevin Schade’s brace plus Luke Shaw’s own-goal and Yoane Wissa’s effort saw Brentford boost their late charge towards a top-eight finish with a 4-3 win over Manchester United, after Mason Mount had initially put the Red Devils in front before Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo netted consolatory goals.

Jarrod Bowen cancelled out Wilson Odobert’s own-goal as West Ham fought back to draw 1-1 at home to Tottenham in East London.
