2024-25 Premier League: Week 36 – Southampton vs Man City

Relegated Southampton host top-five chasing Manchester City at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton are guaranteed to finish rock-bottom regardless of the result, whilst Man City will stay third with a win.

Team News

Southampton have a full squad available for selection following their 2-0 loss at Leicester.

Man City have no fresh injury concerns after their 1-0 win over Wolves, as Erling Haaland look to make his first start since their comeback FA Cup Quarter-Final victory at Bournemouth in late March.

Nathan Ake (foot), John Stones (thigh) and Rodri (knee) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Southampton host Man City at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 10 May at 3pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Southampton are winless in their last seven league meetings against Man City (D2, L5).
  • Man City have lost one of their last seven league visits to Southampton (W5, D1, L1)
  • Haaland has scored three goals in City’s last two matches against Southampton (W2).
  • Coming into this matchweek, no goalkeeper has conceded more top-flight goals this season than Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale (62).
  • Four of City’s eight headed league goals this season were netted by Haaland.

Prediction

With nothing to play for aside from their places in next season’s squad after a lacklustre display at Leicester condemned them to finish rock bottom, Southampton simply can afford to experiment and take huge tactical risks which makes them unpredictable coming into this game.

Man City though were lucky to beat Wolves through a clinical moment in an otherwise sloppy display where excellent saves from Ederson and stubborn defending got them the win, but I do expect them to bounce back against a defensively vulnerable team so this is the ideal game for Haaland to make his return to the pitch.

In fact I just don’t see Southampton getting anything and this should be a routine result for City.

Prediction: Southampton 0-2 Man City

Result: Southampton 0-0 Man City
