F1 Provides Update on #WeRaceAsOne Initiative

Formula One has provided an update on their #WeRaceAsOne initiative, with the dropping of the rainbow logo.

The decision to drop the rainbow symbol as the initiative’s logo comes as the initiative will instead become the sport’s official Environment, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) platform moving forward with the following new logo.

#WeRaceAsOne was created ahead of the 2020 F1 season commencing in July 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic and worldwide lockdown, in an attempt to tackle major issues affecting sport and society from Coronavirus to inequality.

F1 CEO and President, Stefano Domenicali is ‘very proud’ of the initiative and how teams have embraced it, given the positive effectiveness at raising awareness of social issues and commitment in making ‘a positive change.’

Moving forward, F1 bosses have decided to focus the platform on the core aspects of their ESG strategy, with those aspects covering sustainability, diversity & inclusion and community, which are viewed as ‘a priority for the sport’ despite progress being made already but F1 plans further delivery in coming years.

F1 however is planning to retain their pre-race unity moment in a show of support for important issues, with plans to discuss this with drivers and teams in coming weeks following controversy in which several drivers opted to stand instead of taking a knee.

Instead, F1, FIA and all ten constructors will focus on the following factors;

  • Building a clear path towards improving environment elements in the sport from reducing single-use plastic to creating a pathway towards sustainable fuelled hybrid engines.
  • Launching internships and apprenticeships for under-represented groups to provide access to potential careers in F1, whilst providing funding scholarships for engineering students from diverse and underprivileged backgrounds with work experience opportunities during their studies.
  • Growing F1 in schools which is already a world leader in STEM education challenges.
  • Working with promoters across the world to establish and deliver programmes that leaves a positive impact upon local communities.
  • Help raise awareness and support W Series as well as talented young female drivers coming through junior ranks.
  • Developing new freight methods through adapting containers for use on modern aircraft and alternative transport.
  • Continuing to develop remote operations capabilities in an attempt to eliminate further freight being taken to each Grand Prix.

Domenicali also praised the progress made so far on sustainability, saying: “We have already made good progress on our sustainability plans and you will see strong actions being executed this year across all three of our WRAO pillars.”

The ex Ferrari boss is also aware that further progress is required to continue making strides in the quest for equality and protecting the environment, as he said: “We know we must continue to move forward on these issues and the whole sport is united in doing this in the months and years ahead.”
