Norris Wins 2026 Hungarian GP

McLaren’s Lando Norris executed a two-stop strategy to win the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Norris lost the lead to teammate, Oscar Piastri at the second corner on the opening lap which allowed the Aussie to control the first two phases of the race.

Norris however overcut Piastri in their second pit stops and passed Andrea Kimi Antonelli on lap 46 to gain the lead, which allowed him to cruise to a first Grand Prix victory since the 2025 Sao Paulo GP.

Max Verstappen finished second from Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, whilst Charles Leclerc, Isack Hadjar and George Russell completed the top seven.

Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson finished eighth ahead of Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Lawson’s teammate, Arvid Lindblad who rounded out the top ten.

In the drivers’ standings, Antonelli extended his title lead over Hamilton to 50 points going into the summer break.

At lights out, Norris made a clean getaway as Piastri, Verstappen and Hamilton jumped Leclerc as the Monegasque slipped to fifth, whilst Norris lost the lead to Piastri at turn two due to a wide line through the corner due to a late braking mistake.

Russell meanwhile got stuck in anti-stall off the line which dropped the Brit to 18th and left him with a recovery drive to eighth by the end of his race.

Up front, Piastri held off Norris whilst Verstappen kept Hamilton at bay until the seven-time champion pitted on lap 14 and undercut Verstappen who stopped a lap later.

Verstappen however launched a late lunge into turn one on lap 16 to retake a net third place from Hamilton.

Piastri meanwhile pitted on lap 17 from the lead followed by Norris a lap later which left Antonelli out in front from Hadjar, but the latter found himself cleared by Piastri, Norris, Verstappen and Hamilton through the opening five corners of lap 19 such was the tyre difference.

Antonelli’s attempt at an one-stop strategy with a long opening stint was quickly thwarted by the pace of the McLaren pair and he pitted from the lead on lap 23.

Hamilton however triggered an early wave of second pit stops amongst the front runners on lap 31 with Piastri first to rejoin on lap 34 then Leclerc on lap 37.

Norris however stayed out until the end of lap 40 before he made his stop which gave him the net lead, purely because Piastri got stuck behind a scrap between Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz then hit by the latter as he tried to pass on the outside of turn three.

Verstappen pitted a lap later than Norris but switched to the soft tyre in contrast to his immediate rivals on the hard tyre and found himself jumped by Hamilton.

Antonelli meanwhile again ran out of sync in a futile attempt to execute an one-stop strategy but was caught by Norris on lap 44 but after a valiant attempt to hold the reigning champion up, he conceded the lead and victory into turn 2 on lap 46 after he initially ran deep at the first corner.

Antonelli eventually made his second stop on lap 54 but two laps later a virtual safety car was deployed after Piastri stopped at Turn 3 with a gearbox failure.

Several drivers including Norris and Hamilton pitted for soft tyres on lap 57 which saw the latter passed by Verstappen, but confusion over who was ahead between him and Antonelli when he rejoined the circuit at the safety car line until he conceded third to the Italian on lap 59.

F1 will resume the season in Zandvoort, Netherlands, for the final Dutch GP of the current contract on weekend of 21-23 August.
