Manchester City have sacked Gareth Taylor as manager of their Women’s First-Team.

Taylor took charge of Man City’s Women in 2020 and led them to the 2019-20  Women’s FA Cup title after the tournament was spread across two seasons due to the Coronavirus pandemic, before he went on to guide them to 2021-22 Women’s League Cup success.

Results this season however have been inconsistent in recent months after City led the table in five of the first seven matchweeks of the current Women’s Super League season, but have since slipped to fourth in the table and are at risk of missing out on Women’s Champions League qualification via the domestic league.

Taylor’s dismissal also comes ahead of a crunch Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final against Chelsea, with winning that competition now representing one of City’s two chances of qualifying for Europe next season.

Addressing the decision to part company with Taylor, City’s Managing Director – Charlotte O’Neill spoke of the results falling below the expected standards.

“Manchester City prides itself on competing at the top of the WSL and on its outstanding record of qualifying for European competition.

“Unfortunately, results this season have so far not reached this high standard.

“With six games of the WSL campaign remaining, we believe that a change of management will breathe fresh life into our bid to ensure qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Gareth for all of his efforts during his many years at City. Our FA Cup and League Cup triumphs will remain special moments in the history of this football club.”

Ex boss, Nick Cushing will take interim charge until the end of this season whilst a permanent successor is appointed for next season onwards.
