Brentford defender, Rico Henry has applauded his teammates for a “positive” start to the season in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Brentford fought back through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa to briefly lead Spurs following Cristian Romero’s headed opener, before Emerson Royal snatched the North Londoners a solid draw in a thrilling first-half.
Henry provided the assist for Wissa’s 36th minute goal which had put the Bees 2-1 up as he explained how he provided the assist from “a deep free-kick,” as he commented: “Kris [Ajer] put it over the top; he’d made eye contact so I knew it was coming.
“There was space in front of me, I took it past him and Wissa finished it off. It was a good start.
“I saw Wissa drop off, the defender dropped in, and I picked him out.”
Henry was pleased with playing in a back five under manager, Thomas Frank, which enabled him to believe that he would “… get chances to go forward and that’s what I did,” with the crucial assist for Wissa to put the Bees in front.
The 26 year-old added that he thought the Bees played “a good first game” and revealed what his role was within the game, as he said: “The gaffer always tell me to make the back stick, win the balls from the opposite side and be the outlet when the ball is in the middle.
“That’s what I have to do, as well as tracking back and defending.”
Henry meanwhile believes that Brentford have laid a strong foundation to build upon across the season, as they now face a West London derby away to Fulham on Saturday 19 August.
“I thought it was positive,” commented Henry on their overall performance despite failing to find a second half winner in an “equal” contest. “We created chances and should have put away a couple more.”
Henry also applauded Tottenham for providing “difficult” opposition with James Maddison and Yves Bissouma singled out for praise for their performance in limiting Bretford’s ability to attack “until we got the ball and tried to hit them on the counter attack, which we did a couple of times.”
