Brentford manager, Thomas Frank has hailed Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa for proving critics wrong in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Having played their last three matches of last season without suspended striker – Ivan Toney, during which Mbeumo and Wissa scored in wins over West Ham and Tottenham but failed to score in their final-day victory at home to reigning champions, Manchester City.
Brentford however remain without Toney until mid-January which raised questions over whether Mbeumo and Wissa could step up in the long-term, only for the pair to score as Brentford fought back to lead Tottenham in their opening clash of the new season.
Emerson Royal equalised in first-half injury-time as Spurs ultimately denied Frank’s Bees victory in an eventual 2-2 draw, although Frank was ultimately pleased with how Mbeumo and Wissa answered critics who questioned whether they could cover Toney’s absence.
Speaking to media post-match about what it meant to see Mbeumo and Wissa both score, Frank commented: “Seeing them both score was very pleasing. Every time Ivan was out last year and they played together, they scored! And they did that again today.
“That’s the best answer they can give to anyone that might have been in doubt – I was never in doubt, by the way, because they’ve proven it before. So it was really, really good to see that.”
Frank also singled out defender, Rico Henry for praise after the 26 year-old had provided the assist for Wissa’s goal.
I think Rico was maybe our Man of the Match, I’d go as far to say,” said Frank on the 26 year-old’s performance as he praised Henry for his sprints and attack creativity. “I really loved the way he would just sprint forward and create situations.”
Frank though felt that Henry and Mbeumo could of doubled their assist and goal tallies respectively, as he added: “He should have had another assist, by the way, the one where he played a beautiful ball across for Bryan. That was all really good.”
