Brighton’s Head Coach, Roberto De Zerbi is already looking to build upon a “fantastic” campaign heading into next season.
Having replaced Graham Potter in mid-September after Potter’s disastrous move to Chelsea, De Zerbi led Brighton to a sixth-placed finish and Europa League qualification.
De Zerbi’s Seagulls however lost 2-1 at Aston Villa on the final day of the season but the Italian is eager to improve the squad over the summer, as he commented: “The season is finished which is bad news for me – it’s difficult! I will now work with Tony Bloom and the club to improve the squad.”
“This season was fantastic, and we have to try and repeat it,” continued De Zerbi on the club’s targets for next season, which will see them challenge in four major competitions for the first time as a top-flight club.
The defeat at Villa also might be the last time that Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo play for Brighton, with both players linked with big-money transfers this summer.
“I love them and they are two big players for us,” commented De Zerbi on the midfield pair but iterated that they deserve to play for big clubs, as he added: “I think they can play in big European teams but I don’t know what will happen in the future.”
Even if Mac Allister and Caicedo were to stay, De Zerbi still believe that the team has room for improvement, as he concluded: “But for Brighton, I think we can still improve and bring in other good players, from inside the club and through the transfer market.
“Next season we will play in four competitions and the Premier League will be tougher and we have to improve. The result we achieved this season was incredible and we have the dream to improve it next season.”
