Goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal.
Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in August 2021, who had suffered relegation to the Sky Bet Championship just months earlier – in which he made 42 appearances in all competitions across 2020-21 season despite failing to keep the Blades in the top flight.
The 25 year-old has since made 76 appearances for Arsenal in which he kept 25 clean sheets in the Premier League alone.
On signing his new contract with Arsenal, Ramsdale proudly said: “It’s a huge amount of pride, it’s something you work for. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been at the club for a month or for four years, you always want to get the next one and push on with the team.
“To get it after two years, I’m buzzing. It just means I can concentrate and keep my head down, and hopefully after a few more years I’ll get another one and carry on living the dream at the football club.”
Ramsdale though admitted that he initially struggled with the pressure but thanked Bernd Leno for providing competition, as he praised Leno for providing “a great fight” for the number one spot last season, which in-turn created much-needed competition to help his development.
The 25 year-old also added thanks to Arsenal fans for their support, as he added: “As soon as you put that Arsenal shirt on, they’ll give you every chance to try and perform. I knew I could win them over at some point – and thankfully I did that quite early really.”
Speaking about Ramsdale’s decision to commit his future to the Gunners, manager – Mikel Arteta – who is up for Premier League Manager of the Season, said: “We’re all so happy that Aaron has signed a new contract. The way Aaron has developed over the past two years has been exceptional, with his performances, contribution and overall adaptation to the club.
“It’s great that we’re continuing to build our future with our biggest talents in our young squad. We’re all looking forward to enjoying many more years of Aaron the player and the person at the football club.”
Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Edu added that having secured Ramsdale to a new long-term contract is a “great” feeling for the club, as he added: “We have enjoyed so many positive moments from Aaron’s performances in his two years with us, and are looking forward to many more.”
Edu also iterated that at just 25 years-old, Ramsdale is still maturing as a goalkeeper as he concluded: “We must also remember that Aaron is still very young, so there is still a lot more to come from him, as we continue to build with our young foundations.”
Prior to joining Arsenal from Sheffield Utd, Ramsdale had previously made 37 appearances for Bournemouth in 2019-20 season, having signed for the Cherries in 2017 from the Blades and has enjoyed loan spells at Worksop Town, Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon.
