Fullback, Joao Cancelo has joined Bayern Munich on loan from Manchester City until end of 2022-23 season.
Cancelo’s shock loan move comes after he unexpectedly fell down the pecking order after returning from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, in which he made just three starts compared to 22 starts before the World Cup.
Man City has therefore sanctioned this loan deal in order to allow the 28 year-old Portuguese international fullback to seek further playing time.
Speaking about his decision to make a temporary switch to Bayern, Cancelo commented: “FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world, and it’s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team.
“I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I‘ll give my best for FC Bayern.”
Bayern board member for sport, Hasan Salihamidzic added that the club are “very happy” to welcome Cancelo and will have an option to buy him in the summer, for £61.5m as agreed with City when they agreed the terms of his loan move.
Salihamidzic added that Cancelo had been on the club’s radar due to his “qualities” as he proceeded to add: “He’s the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team.
“I’m convinced João will help us in the coming weeks and months where we want to win titles.”
Man City meanwhile issued the following brief statement on Cancelo’s move: ‘Joao Cancelo has joined Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season.
‘The 28-year-old joined City from Juventus in 2019, following spells in Spain and his native Portugal.
‘The Portuguese has now moved to Germany to join the Bundesliga outfit for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.’
Should Cancelo indeed complete a permanent switch to Bayern, he will leave City having scored 10 goals in 154 appearances since he arrived in August 2019, during which he helped the team to two Premier League and League Cup titles apiece.
