Huddersfield Town have announced that Carlos Corberan has resigned from his position as Head Coach.

Corberan arrived at Huddersfield in July 2020 from Yorkshire rivals – Leeds United, where he had served as first-team coach under Marcelo Bielsa and Under-23s Head Coach at Elland Road.

In his first season at the Terriers, he guided the club to a 20th placed league finish in the Championship, which led to a huge turnaround last season as Huddersfield finished third in the regular season but lost the Promotion Play-Off Final to Nottingham Forest.

Corberan however decided last night (6 July) to resign from his role alongside his colleague, Jorge Alarcon, just weeks before the 2022-23 season commences with Huddersfield at home to Burnley in the opening match on Friday 29 July.

Chairman and Chief Executive, Dean Hoyle has spoken on Corberan’s departure as he described the timing “as a real shock”, following Corberan’s meeting with Head of Football Operations, Leigh Bromby, last night to confirm his decision to part company with the club.

Hoyle nevertheless paid tribute to Corberan’s work to help Huddersfield progress throughout the last two seasons, as he commented: “Everyone at the Club sincerely thanks Carlos for his hard work over the last two seasons and for the way he has helped to take us forward. I really hope he goes on to have a great career.”

On where Huddersfield move forward from Corberan’s departure, Hoyle insisted that this departure is just a moment that will “test” the team, as he believes that Huddersfield now sit “in a great position” to continue their progression and fight for promotion this season.

Hoyle also moved to reassure supporters as he said: “I know change like this, particularly when it’s out of the blue, can be worrying for supporters. I assure everyone that we will do all we can to continue to drive this Club forward after a really positive 12 months.

“We need to have trust in what we have built at the Club and keep faith in what we collectively believe we can achieve through hard work and purpose.”

Issuing a rallying call for supporters to show “Terrier Spirit,” Hoyle urged fans to show unity as he added: “It’s about togetherness; everyone coming together to pull in one direction for the greater good of Huddersfield Town.

“It’s about standing up to any challenge, together, and powering through it. It’s about belief in the people we have here and what they are capable of. It’s about a positive, can-do attitude.”

Hoyle also confirmed that Danny Schofield will take interim charge of the first-team until a new appointment is made, just like he did in 2020 between Danny Cowley’s departure and Corberan’s arrival.

Bromby added that it was “with sadness” that he accepted Corberan’s decision to resign, as he explained why the 39 year-old has decided to resign: “He was obviously a big part of what was a fantastic season in 2021/22, but he has subsequently come to us over the last 24 hours and made it clear that he doesn’t think he is the man to take us forward.”

With just 22 days until their season-opener, Bromby described the timing as “disappointing” but believes that Schofield will provide “continuity and stability” until a permanent successor is appointed, following the creation of succession plans for this type of scenario.

Bromby went on to explain why Schofield was named as Head Coach on a temporary basis, as he commented: “He knows the Club, the players, our coaching programme, and our structure as well as anyone and is ideally positioned to give us continuity.

“Danny is highly rated and well respected across football and, this summer, turned down an opportunity to become Head Coach of a club in the top division of a European league because he believes in what we’re doing here.

“His work at our Club has been outstanding, and he’s earned this opportunity.”

Bromby also paid tribute to Corberan for producing “hard work” across two seasons at the John Smith Stadium, as he concluded that he wishes the ex Ermis manager “… the very best for the future.”
