2022-23 Sky Bet Championship: Week One Roundup

Roundup of the opening weekend of 2022-23 Sky Bet Championship season as Millwall took top spot in a competitive matchweek one. 

Leeds United loanee, Charlie Creswell enjoyed a dream debut at The Den as his 12th minute header and 65th minute volleyed strike from set pieces fired Millwall top with a 2-0 home win over Stoke City.

Late goals from Ozan Tufan and Jean Michael Seri saw Hull City fight back to go second with a 2-1 victory at home to Bristol City, after the Robins had led through Andreas Weimann’s 30th minute strike.

Ian Maatsen’s 18th minute strike from Ashley Barnes’ flicked backpass saw Burnley sit third, following a narrow 1-0 away win at last season’s losing play-off finalist – Huddersfield who began life without Carlos Corberan after he quit at the start of pre-season.

Lewis Travis’ 34th minute strike from 25 yards saw Blackburn beat QPR at Ewood Park to sit fourth ahead of Blackpool, as Callum Connolly’s ninth-minute rebound strike saw the Tangerines enjoy a successful start under Michael Appleton with victory over Reading.

Romaine Sawyers scored a 49th minute curled winner on debut as Cardiff stunned newly relegated Norwich to go sixth in a fierce clash, which saw Perry Ng and Grant Hanley red carded as both teams finished with 10 men apiece.

Joao Pedro’s 56th minute strike from Ismaila Sarr’s pass on a counter-attack saw Watford scrape a 1-0 home win over Sheffield United to go seventh, in the Hornets’ first match under new manager – Rob Edwards.

Coventry sit eighth after Viktor Gyokeres’ 84th minute 25-yard strike rescued a 1-1 draw at newly promoted Sunderland, who had led through Jack Clarke’s 12th minute header.

Harry Darling’s long-range debut on strike cancelled out Chiedozie Ogbene’s opener as Swansea recovered to a 1-1 draw at newly promoted Rotherham United, which put the Swans ninth in the table.

John Swift’s 51st minute sweeper from Jed Wallace’s pullback pass saw West Brom snatch a 1-1 draw at last season’s seventh-placed team – Middlesbrough, who had led through Isiah Jones’ 10th minute goal.

Wigan on their return to the Championship after two seasons in League One snatched a goalless draw at home to Preston, as the visitors saw Ched Evans red carded for a 80th minute foul on Curtis Tilt.

Finally, Luton held Birmingham City to a goalless draw in a competitive clash at Kenilworth Road.
