Defender, Joe Gomez has signed a new long-term contract to remain at Liverpool.
Gomez began his career at Charlton Athletic where he graduated through their youth ranks to make his first-team debut in an 4-0 opening round win against Colchester United in 2014-15 League Cup, before going on to make 24 appearances in total that season.
His performances for the Addicks however were enough to impress Liverpool who signed the centre-back in June 2015, with Gomez having since gone on to make 142 appearances in all competitions.
Speaking about his decision to extend his contract across coming seasons, Gomez said: “It’s obviously a special moment for me and my family. Another one that you dream of as a kid and one I don’t take for granted.
“It is an unbelievable place to be; in my eyes, probably one of the best – if not the best – clubs in the world at the minute. The opportunity to extend my stay here was an easy decision to make, really.”
Having already spent seven seasons at Anfield, Gomez is aware that he could of easily decided to move on for a fresh challenge, yet has chosen to stay as he explained:
“Obviously, I have been here quite a while now, but in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and, like you say, the best years are ahead of me. I have got more to learn and the time to do that.
“I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead.”
Looking ahead to the new season, the 25 year-old stated his ambition that “the sky is the limit” for Liverpool as he and his teammates look to again chase a historic quadruple.
On whether the squad has the talent needed to make that ambition happen, Gomez commented: “We definitely have the ability to do that and the belief is there, it’s just about us taking it one game at a time, like we did last season, and just being true to ourselves, playing the way we play under the gaffer’s guidance.
“Who is to say we can’t go on to do more than we did last season?”
During his time at Anfield, Gomez has helped the Reds clinch titles in the following six competitions: Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
