West Ham United edged closer towards relegation from the Premier League after a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United.
Nick Woltemade fired Newcastle into a 15th-minute lead with a flicked finish of Harvey Barnes’ short cross, before William Osula struck either side of half time for his first brace in a Newcastle shirt to wrap up the victory, which left Eddie Howe’s Magpies 11th in the table.
Valentin Castellanos rescued a consolatory goal for West Ham in the 69th minute with a powerful volley, but the Hammers would be relegated on Tuesday 19 May if Tottenham win at Chelsea.
In knowledge that a win would lift them out of the relegation zone at the expense of London rivals – Tottenham prior to kick-off, West Ham made an initially positive start but failed to capitalise upon their early opportunities.
Newcastle soon settled and swiftly asserted their authority with a lively intensity to their movement which the Hammers struggled to get on top of, although they were lucky to not concede a penalty after Tomas Soucek accidentally handballed a cross from Bruno Guimaraes.
The Magpies’ intensity soon proved decisive as West Ham attempted to play out from the back unaware that Harvey Barnes was lurking on the right flank, which saw him nip possession off Matheus Fernandes in the 15th minute and teed up Woltemade to flick his cross into the far-bottom left corner to put the hosts ahead.
Woltemade’s goal also meant that the German had ended a 15-match goal drought in all competitions, having last scored in 3-1 second-half comeback at Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup in February.
Newcastle soon lifted further pressure just four minutes later as a fantastic free-flowing series of one-touch passes up the right flank fell for Ramsey, which allowed the midfielder to tee up an unmarked Osula to rifle in past Mads Hermansen to double the Magpies’ lead.
West Ham soon began to try to offer a futile first-half response as Crysencio Summerville’s 29th-minute cutback pass was smashed onto goal by Valentin Castellanos, yet Nick Pope was alert to block the Argentinean forward’s shot and El Hadji Malick Diouf’s follow-up strike.
Newcastle however nearly put the game beyond West Ham’s grasp moments before half time but Hermansen comfortably saved Barnes’ right-footed shot.
West Ham’s hopes of an unlikely comeback were eventually sniffed out after Pablo lost possession from a 65th-minute throw-in, which allowed Osula to play an one-two move with substitute, Joe Willock before he slotted the return pass to net Newcastle’s third goal.
The finish also meant that Osula achieved his second brace in a Newcastle shirt, having previously netted two goals in a single game back in September 2025 as the Magpies beat Bradford in the third round of this season’s Carabao Cup.
West Ham however denied Newcastle a first clean sheet in seven matches after Mads Hermansen’s long goal-kick was allowed to bounce deep into the Magpies’ half, which allowed Castellanos to strike a right-footed volley into the far-left corner.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers soon received further hope after Lewis Hall brought down Callum Wilson with a 72nd-minute tackle, yet referee – Jarred Gillett dismissed West Ham’s appeal for a penalty.
Castellanos subsequently posed West Ham’s biggest threat but failed to convert any of his chances, whilst Jarrod Bowen saw a 74th-minute shot saved by Pope.
Newcastle eventually saw out the win and West Ham now must beat Leeds in their final match of the season at home to Leeds and hope that Tottenham lose to both Chelsea and Everton, otherwise the Hammers will be relegated to the Championship.
Howe’s Magpies meanwhile hold an outside mathematical chance of snatching eighth and qualification for the UEFA Conference League, but they must beat Fulham and hope that results elsewhere go in their favour.

Newcastle conclude their season with a trip to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday 24 May at 4pm BST, with every team kicking off at the same time on the final day.
