England defender, Lucy Bronze has signed a new one-year contract extension at Chelsea until June 2027.
Bronze’s contract expired on Tuesday after she delivered five goals in 56 appearances across the last two seasons, during which she helped them achieve a domestic treble in the 2024-25 season then defended their Women’s League Cup title last season.
The 34 year-old defender however had been in extensive discussions over a new one-year contract extension in recent months, which has now been officially completed with Bronze happy to extend her spell in West London as Chelsea Women move to Stamford Bridge next season.
“I feel like this is the right thing for me at this time. I’ve really enjoyed the last two years being at Chelsea and back in England, and I feel like we’re in a place now where we’re moving forward as a club. Added to the move to Stamford Bridge, it’s a really exciting time to be part of the team.”
Bronze also spoke of her belief that she has more to give to Chelsea in her playing career as their second-eldest player after goalkeeper – Becky Spencer, with view to leading the team to more trophy success after a tricky second season under Sonia Bompastor.
“You know, as you get older and you gain more experience, you become a leader regardless of what team you’re in and who you’re with,” explained Bronze on how she hopes to impart her wisdom on the squad. ‘Apart from Becky, I’m the oldest and the most experienced, so I’ve probably just got a little bit more of that to give.
“We have lots of other players like that who have all different types of experience and lead in different ways. We’ve got a good group to help lead and give experience to the team.
“Understanding the history of the game, of each club, the league and the national team, I feel is really important. You can pass that knowledge on to the younger players because the game’s in a good place, but it’s still not in the best place it could be.
“I think we need to remind ourselves where we’ve come from and where we still have to go. There’s always something to be done to push the game on – and the players have to be the biggest advocates of that.”
