Wolves have signed midfielder, Angel Gomes from Marseille on an initial loan deal with an option to sign permanently in the summer.

Gomes’ move came after six months at Marseille where he has recorded four goals and one assist across 1,092 minutes of football across 20 appearances in all competitions, although he managed just eight minutes of football in Ligue 1 across the last two months after he fell out of favour with manager – Roberto De Zerbi.

Wolves have consequently signed the  25-year-old on loan until the end of the season for a £865k loan fee, but will have the option to sign him permanently for £6m in the summer which could take the total fee to £6.9m if the latter option is activated.

Manager, Rob Edwards is “delighted,” and “really excited” to secure Gomes given their previous history during Edwards’ time as a coach with England Under-20s.

“I’m delighted, really excited. I’ve got a really good relationship with Angel – we go back quite a long way now. At the FA we got on really, really well.

“I thought he was a brilliant, technical player, and he’s got a great brain. He gives us real quality in that midfield area and it’s a really exciting signing for the football club.

“He and I have been speaking for the last few weeks. I explained what we wanted to do and that we would love to have him here, and how he can help us. He’s really excited to get playing in England, and it’s really exciting for us to have someone who’s hungry to be here and wants to show everyone how good is.

“He’s young, but he’s experienced now, he’s got a lot of games behind him. Everything that he brings, his intensity, his energy, his enthusiasm for football, we want him to bring all of that. He’s got bags of quality, so I’m looking forward to seeing him integrate into the group.”

Gomes began his career at Manchester United where he graduated through their youth academy to make ten senior appearances without scoring, before he moved to Lille in August 2020 on a free transfer but he was soon loaned out to Portugal’s Boavista where he scored six goals in 32 appearances.

He returned to Lille for the 2021-22 season and helped them win the Trophee des Champions at the start of that campaign, as he went on to score 10 goals in 134 total appearances for Lille across four seasons before he joined Marseille on a free transfer in July 2025.

Gomes represents England at international level where he has graduated through the youth ranks to notch up four senior appearances for the Three Lions, having made his debut for England Men’s National Team in a 2-0 victory away to Republic of Ireland in September 2024.

At international youth level, he was part of England’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup winning squad in 2017, before he followed up that feat with the 2023 UEFA Under-21 Euro title, with Spain having coincidentally been the opposition in the final of both tournaments.
