Spain have sacked Montse Tome as their Women’s manager and appointed Sonia Bermudez as her replacement with immediate effect.
Tome’s sacking came two weeks after the world champions suffered defeat to England in the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro Final on penalties, having initially taken a half-time lead through Mariona Caldentey before Alessia Russo equalised for the Lionesses.
During her near-two-year spell in charge following her appointment in September 2023 after Jorge Vilda was sacked amidst a post World Cup title success scandal, Tome led Spain to the 2024 UEFA Women’s Nations League title and fourth place at 2024 Olympics.
Announcing Tome’s exit, the RFEF thanked her for her work throughout her time in charge over the last two years.
“The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation wanted to thank Montse Tomé for her work, professionalism and dedication from different responsibilities during her time as a member of the national teams in the RFEF, especially during the time she held the position of senior national coach.”
Bermudez was swiftly announced as Tome’s replacement and previously scored 35 goals in 63 senior international appearances for Spain as a forward, before she led Spain to 2024 UEFA Women’s Under-19s Euro success and most recently was their Under-23s manager.
The 40-year-old will be assisted by Iraia Iturregi who most recently was assistant coach at CD Basconia, who won promotion to the fourth tier at the end of last season.
