Notts County have sacked Stuart Maynard after 16 months in charge.
Maynard replaced Luke Williams in January 2024 and guided the Magpies to a 14th-placed finish at the end of last season, before they improved to sixth this season where they went on to lose 2-0 on aggregate to AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off semi-final after a pair of narrow 1-0 defeats.
Club bosses however were left unimpressed at missing out on promotion after spending 11 matchweeks in the automatic promotion placings, and decided to part company with Maynard, who had overseen a run of one win in their last eight games – including the two-legged play-off semi-final.
County owners, Chris and Alex Reedtz explained in a public statement that the decision to sack Maynard was down to result and performance levels, especially in the run-in.
“While football is a game of fine margins, and Stuart undoubtedly faced numerous challenges over the course of the campaign, neither results nor performances reached the levels we believe the team was capable of – particularly during the defining period towards the end.
“Stuart leaves with our very best wishes and gratitude for his considerable commitment and dedication to the role.”
Chris and Alex also vowed to soon “… provide a comprehensive update to supporters, offering more of our own reflections on the 2024-25 campaign while also outlining our approach to next season and beyond.”
The pair proceeded to dispel any potential for fake news to spread about their commitment to the club following Maynard’s exit, as they added: “We are highly optimistic about the club’s future and remain as committed as ever to helping Notts County achieve its immense potential.”
Maynard leaves the club having won 28, drew 16 and lost 29 of his 73 matches in charge.
