Bonmati Retains Ballon d’Or Title

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati retained her title as the world’s best female player at 2024 Ballon d’Or. 

Bonmati’s success meant that she retained her title and continued Barcelona’s run this decade of having swept the top player award, with Alexia Putellas having won in 2021 & 22.

Upon accepting her award, Bonmati commented; “Thank you so much for your applause. I’m so grateful to be here to receive this award for the second time.

“I always say this is not something that you can do alone, I’m so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful players who help me to keep growing into a better player.

“So thank you to my teammates because without them I wouldn’t be here, I would also like to thank my club and Joan Laporta.”

Last season saw Bonmati score 19 goals and produce 17 assists for Barcelona who won four titles, whilst she also helped Spain win the inaugural UEFA Women’s Nations League title.

Bonmati’s Barcelona teammates, Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo rounded out the top three, as the Catalonian club achieved a clean sweep of the Women’s Ballon d’Or podium.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey was the only current Women’s Super League player who made the top ten as she finished eighth, after a strong campaign with Barcelona last season before her move this summer.

Barcelona were crowned as the Women’s Club of the Year after completing a quadruple of; Liga F, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana and UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Emma Hayes was voted 2024 Women’s Coach of the Year after she led Chelsea to the WSL title in her final season, before she proceeded to guide USA to Olympic Gold in her first tournament as an international manager.

Jennifer Hermoso was handed the Socrates Award for her bravery to speak out on sexist discrimination within Spain’s RFEF, which ultimately brought about the downfall of now ex president – Luis Rubiales and led to Jorge Vilda’s dismissal.

 

Rodri Crowned 2024 Men’s Ballon d’Or

Manchester City’s Rodri beat Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior to be crowned 2024 Men’s Ballon d’Or in a surprise result.

His success came after he produced 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions to help Manchester City to the Premier League title, then played a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euros title triumph.

Rodri’s Man City teammates, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden were the highest-placed Premier League players outside of the top three, as they finished fifth and 11th respectively.

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal won the Kopa Trophy after a breakthrough year for the 17 year-old, during which he became the youngest-ever goalscorer at UEFA Euros with his equaliser against France in the semi-finals en-route to the title.

Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo finished third in the category on a day which saw the Red Devils sack manager, Erik Ten Hag, with Real Madrid’s Arda Guler second in the vote ahead of the England international.

Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez retained the Yashin Trophy following another strong year in goal, as he helped the Villain finish fourth in the Premier League and reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals.

Bayern Munich and England international, Harry Kane was awarded the Gerd Muller alongside Kylian Mbappe who moved from PSG to Real Madrid this summer, after both players produced exceptional seasons.

Real Madrid were crowned as the Men’s Club of the Year after they achieved a treble last season of; La Liga, Supercopa de Espana and UEFA Champions League titles.

Real boss, Carlo Ancelotti consequently was declared as the Men’s Coach of the Year amidst competition from Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Spain’s Luis de la Fuente amongst others.
