Andy Woodman believes Bromley have developed “little building blocks” in their 2-2 draw at Blackpool.
Albie Morgan and Tom Bloxham twice fired Blackpool in front at Bloomfield Road either side of Victor Adeboyejo’s equaliser, before Jordan Brown’s own-goal in the 55th minute handed Bromley a draw which ended their three-match losing streak.
Bromley nevertheless slipped to third-bottom as a result of Wycombe Wanderers’ 3-2 win at Leyton Orient having lifted the Chairboys out of the relegation zone.
Woodman in his post-match interview with BFC TV explained that he was pleased that his first proper chance to do tactical work in training has translated into an improved match performance.
“I thought we were good for it today. I thought we’ve got a lot of work in this week. It’s the first proper week we’ve got sort of a chance to get on the training pitch and do some real tactical stuff as a group.
“So yeah it was pleasing that it paid off. I felt we should have probably got a bit more out of the game actually. And we’re just getting punished for little misdemeanours, little errors, just getting punished and that’s the level of rap. But we’re learning on a job and that’s the kind of nice thing more now.
“I’m super proud of the boys. I’m going to go down and show that bite and fight and there’s some good football as well. And We could have had another goal. I think it was touch and go whether it’s over the line or not. That’s real good performance I felt and a real Bromley like.”
Woodman added that he was happy to see their early discipline in the execution of the game plan and how they responded to conceding the first goal from Morgan’s 10th-minute free-kick.
“I mean we had a set-up, we had a plan, we had a way we wanted to play, we knew, we looked at them and we knew how they wanted to go about their stuff. So all the work we’ve done on the training pitch, you know, really came to fruition. So that was really pleasing and pleasing that the guys were just disciplined in what they were doing.
“Just the goal, you know, the goal just knocks the wind out of your sail. It’s a real killer, you know, from that point of view, but look I can’t fault the effort and the determination and the will to make sure they got back in the game and fair baits to the boys they did that.”
Adeboyejo however pulled Bromley level with a 18th-minute header which left the 55-year-old gaffer feeling that his team had shown signs of how dangerous they can be at set pieces, whilst now clicking as a squad.
“I mean we looked dangerous and set pieces to that. I felt we looked really like when you did roles, it was aggressive. And if you haven’t got a set piece, I felt like we had a chance of scoring fair play to Victor. He popped that one in and there was another one that was probably touch and go whether it was over or not.”
“And it looks like we’re as a group of players, I’m sensing amongst them they’re getting to know each other, they’re a honest bunch and now they’re getting to demand of each other in the right way, And that’s what top teams do. And I can feel that now in the group.
“That’s what I’m really chuffed with that.”
Bloxham restored Blackpool’s lead on the cusp of half time but Woodman felt that Bromley could still stage a comeback as he explained his half-time message to the team, and credited Bailey Peacock-Farrell for saving Kamarl Grant’s 92nd-minute header to salvage a point for the Tangerines.
“The message at half time was look, ‘I believe you can win this game. I believe you know you’ve got this, you had the team on the rack at that point.’
“And then second half, I felt up in the little five minutes at the end, but we had a little spell of sort of keeping the ball around into our box. I thought we were really trying to go for the win, kept pushing forward which I was delighted. And then right at the end, I mean there are some slave from the goalkeeper from that point blank head.
“I mean that wins you the game normally. So credit to him, that was the difference that we didn’t win it on that save. So no complaints from me, I’m really chuffed. And we’ve made some little building blocks here now in a league that’s a tricky league.”
George Saville and Kamil Conteh in particular drew praise for their contributions to a controlled midfield performance, even despite losing left-back Richard Taylor in defence to injury.
“Yeah, they did. And it’s tough for me, you know, it’s really is tough. I mean George and Kamil, you know, they’re getting to know each other, they’re getting to know how we play. And I thought there was some real good play in there. So, that was a real plus for us.
“There were some real stellar performances and I’ve got to say, we lost our left-back again, which is a real shame. Then we got our right-footed centre-half kind of left-back, Chanse Headman, who was fantastic.
“I mean fair play to him, I mean it’s a big ask for a young kid to go and do that role. And he really stepped up with a delightful.”
Woodman added that Taylor’s injury looks serious and rued their recent issues in the left-back role.
“No, not good. Not great. Rich to be fair. So we’d have a look at that, but it’s not good. We just seem to be, I mean, a problem at that position at the moment, which is a little bit frustrating from my point of view.
“But you know we’ve got no excuse culture and we’re going to just get on with it.”
Bromley next host Huddersfield on Saturday 19 September at 3pm BST at the CopperJax Community Stadium, but Woodman iterated that he isn’t getting carried away by the draw at Blackpool as the team now need to keep building and stick to their “standards” of play.
“Well and I’m just not getting too carried away just yet. I think we’ve got little building blocks and we’ve got to make sure that we keep to our standards and we keep to our disciplines and we keep to our expectations in-house.
“It’s another good game. We’ve got to go about it the same way with the same discipline and the same energy and the same goal and really everything. You know every game is going to be like that. And that’s our right approach here all the time.”
