2023-24 Premier League: Week 38 Roundup

Roundup of the final day of 2023-24 Premier League season as the title, European qualification and relegation were finalised.

Phil Foden’s first-half brace plus a goal from Rodri saw Manchester City beat West Ham 3-1 at home to secure a fourth consecutive league title, despite West Ham offering a brief scare through Mohammed Kudus’ bicycle-kick goal.

Arsenal’s wait for a first league title since 2004 went on despite coming from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at home, through goals from Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz after Idrissa Gueye put the Toffees ahead from a deflected free-kick.

Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield farewell ended on a high as Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah netted in a 2-0 home win over ten-men Wolves, after the Old Gold’s Nelson Semedo was sent off for a 28th minute foul on Mac Allister.

Fourth-placed Aston Villa wrapped up their most successful season since 1995-96 campaign with a 5-0 loss at Crystal Palace, as Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a hat-trick and Eberechi Eze netted twice for the Eagles.

Down in the relegation zone, Carlton Morris’ penalty and Alfie Doughty’s strike couldn’t prevent Luton going down with a 4-2 home loss to Fulham as Raul Jimenez struck twice for the Cottagers in-between goals from Adama Traore and Harry Wilson.

Josh Cullen’s 20-yard strike couldn’t prevent Burnley from going down on a high after Vincent Kompany’s Clarets lost 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest, as Chris Wood’s brace against his former team secured survival for the Tricky Trees.

Rock bottom Sheffield United finished a disastrous season with Andre Brooks both red carded in a ….-0 loss at home to Tottenham, with Dejan Kulusevski’s brace and Pedro Porro’s effort securing fifth-place and Europa League qualification.

Elsewhere, Moises Caicedo’ 17th minute stunning strike from 50 yards plus Raheem Sterling’s effort secured sixth for Chelsea with a 2-1 home victory over Bournemouth, despite Benoit Badiashile’s own-goal.

Bruno Guimaraes netted a 77th minute winner for Newcastle in a 4-2 win at Brentford after Vitaly Janelt and Yoane Wissa gave the Bees hope of a comeback following first-half goals from Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak for the Magpie.

Finally, Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Højlund struck late for Manchester United for a clinical 2-0 win at Brighton, meaning that Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils must win the FA Cup if want European qualification next season.
