Fulham have signed attacking midfielder, Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal in a £34m transfer.
Smith Rowe’s move to the Cottagers has seen his 14-year at Arsenal come to an end, having graduated through the Gunners’ academy since he joined at the age of 10 in 2010 but struggled for regular game time last season.
Arsenal consequently entertained bids from Fulham and Crystal Palace but after negotiations, the Gunners accepted Fulham’s offer of £27m initial fee plus £7m in add-ons – taking the total fee to £34m.
Speaking to FFCtv about his switch to Fulham, Smith Rowe commented: “I’m finally here, so I’m really happy for me and my family – it’s a good moment.
“I’m really excited, I just wanted to get here as quickly as possible so I could get going with my teammates.
“Listening to the project, speaking to the Manager, and seeing what players we have here already, I think it’s an exciting project for me, and definitely the perfect step for my career going forward.”
Vice-Chairman and Director of Football Operations, Tony Khan added: “I’m thrilled to announce the arrival of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham Football Club!
“We’re very excited to sign such a talented young player, and we look forward to Emile joining the squad in Portugal as we continue to prepare for the new season ahead!”
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta meanwhile issued his own statement praising Smith Rowe for his professionalism, but believes that Fulham is the right move for him.
“Emile’s commitment, attitude and energy every day was first class, always stepping up when the team needed him. He came into the first team and was instrumental during a difficult moment for us.
“He created an important impression, with his strong performances making our supporters proud.
“I’m sad that Emile is leaving us, but excited for him to take this new opportunity at this stage of his career, when he needs to be starting matches and playing regularly.
“Emile is loved by everyone at the club and leaves us with our gratitude, absolute respect and best wishes. We all wish Emile and his family well at Fulham.”
During his time in North London, Smith Rowe made his competitive senior debut against Vorskla Poltava in the UEFA Europa League in September 2018, and went on to score 18 goals in 115 appearances but has failed to net in 33 appearances across the last two seasons.
Smith Rowe though leaves with two Community Shield titles under his belt with Arsenal, having featured as an unused substitute against Liverpool in 2020 which was won on penalties, then likewise in 2023 against Manchester City in which he this time made a substitute appearance.
The now 23 year-old endured a tough 2018-19 season out on loan with just three appearances at RB Leipzig, before he was recalled and loaned out to Huddersfield, where he fared better with two goals in 19 appearances for the Terriers.
