Aston Martin have announced that Felipe Drugovich will replace Lance Stroll for Free Practice 1 at 2023 Italian Grand Prix.

Per FIA regulations, each driver must sit out at least one FP1 session for a rookie driver and in line with the rules, Aston Martin have decided that Stroll will miss FP1 at this weekend’s Italian GP in order to run 2022 F2 champion – Felipe Drugovich.

Drugovich previously replaced Stroll for the pre-season test which saw him impress but the regulations apply to the actual season, meaning that the Brazilian will again step into Stroll’s car for a proper practice session.

Speaking about his latest chance to participate in a FP1 session after he first did so at last season’s Abu Dhabi GP. Drugovich said: “I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of the AMR23. The car felt great when I drove it in pre-season testing and it will be fascinating to feel how it has improved since then.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the simulator helping to develop the car, so understanding how that correlates to the real thing will be super valuable for me too.”

Drugovich also iterated that he is keen to demonstrate what he has learned throughout his testing programme in recent months, with this “fanstastic opportunity” to drive at Monza which is known for its high speeds.

The Brazilian also aims to contribute to the team’s development as he added: “Since Bahrain I’ve done many more miles in an F1 car so I have an even better understanding of how I can deliver valuable feedback for the team.”

Team Principal, Mike Krack added that the team “are delighted” that Drugovich will step into Stroll’s car for FP1.

Krack proceeded to praise Drugovich for his contributions towards Aston Martin’s success this season, as he said: “He demonstrated his capabilities in pre-season testing, with a vital contribution to the team’s initial development of the car.

“Monza will offer another chance for Felipe to work closely with the engineers and mechanics and build his confidence in a critical session for the team. We look forward to maximising this session together.”

Stroll will return to the cockpit of his Aston Martin car for FP2 and the remainder of the weekend.
