Manchester City have signed Spanish left-back, Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht for £11 million.

Gomez’s move to City comes after just one season at Anderlecht, where he scored six goals in 49 appearances for the Belgian club.

Confirmation of City’s capture of Gomez also resolves manager – Pep Guardiola’s concern about the left-back position, with only Joao Cancelo and Nathan Ake able to fill that position at start of this season due to Aymeric Laporte’s knee injury.

“I am incredibly proud and happy to have joined Manchester City,” commented Gomez as he hailed Man City as “the best team in England” and is looking forward to life under Guardiola and having the “…chance to learn and develop under the most outstanding manager in world football.”

Reflecting on the chance to be coached by ex Barcelona manager, Guardiola, Gomez continued: “Playing for and being guided by Pep and his coaches is going to be very special.”

With City currently top of the table after matchweek two of the new Premier League season with new signings including Erling Haaland, Gomez added: “To be able to be part of this club is a dream come true for me and something any young player would aspire to.”

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain added that the club “are delighted” to welcome Gomez who he described as “…a very exciting young talent.”

Gomez began his career within Barcelona’s youth setup before joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 but only managed two appearances, before he spent two seasons on loan at Huesca prior to his move to Anderlecht last season.

Begiristain therefore has praised the 21 year-old for his development as he said: “Sergio’s development in recent seasons has been very impressive – he is an accomplished defender with great potential.

“Over the past year, he has gained excellent experience playing in the Belgian League and in Europe with Anderlecht.”

On what Gomez can add to City moving forward, Begiristain concluded: “We’re sure that he will bring additional quality to our squad both in defence and going forward and that he will only continue to develop and improve playing under Pep and his coaches.”

Gomez will wear the number 21 shirt and has signed a four-year contract until June 2026.
