Nuno Espirito Santo believes that West Ham can form “positive” momentum after a 6-0 Championship win at Lincoln City.
After red cards for Lincoln City’s Tom Hamer and Conor McGrandles, Konstantinos Mavropanos headed the Hammers in front at half time, before Edvin Austbo, Jarrod Bowen and Pablo found the net prior to Tomas Soucek’s brace which sealed a dominant win for the third-placed Hammers.
Espirito Santo post-match told whufc.com that he expected a tricky away game initially but was pleased with the result despite the Imps’ best effort to stifle his Hammers until they went down to nine men.
“We knew coming to Lincoln is tough, but the circumstances of the game made it not so tough.
“But credit for Lincoln, even with ten men, they were in the game during the fights, but we had to manage the situation sometimes.
“Many of us might think that it’s easier, but it requires patience. It requires a good reaction, good combinations and, at the same time, keeping the focus on the game to keep the clean sheet, which is important.
“There were so many positives inside of the game, good performances, players coming back, scoring, so it’s a huge boost of confidence.
“So it’s a positive night.”
West Ham now visit league leaders, Swansea away on Saturday 17 October at 3pm BST and Espirito Santo feels that the win will make their recovery ahead of that trip easier.
“It’s going to be a different situation and the boys now travel, so it’s giving them time to recover. It’s easier, the legs go better and go faster in the recovery after a win, so it’s a good night for us.”
With West Ham now unbeaten in their last eight league matches and favourites for an immediate promotion back to the Premier League, Espirito Santo feels that his team just need to keep building momentum knowing that a rut could easily come at an unexpected moment.
“We had a tough, tough one at home against QPR, so today was good.
“We know that football is full of surprises, so what we have to do is keep this togetherness, this team spirit that we have.
“That is what, for me, is more important and what can keep us growing and improving.”
