Haas will run Robert Shwartzman in the 2021 Formula One post-season Young Drivers’ Test in Abu Dhabi in December.
Shwartzman currently sits third in Formula 2 with a 43 point deficit to championship leader – Oscar Piastri with just two rounds of this season left, and is part of Ferrari’s Driver Academy (FDA) where he drove for the Scuderia in last season’s Young Driver Test.
This year though will see the Russian drive for Haas at Yas Marina with Shwartzman expressing his gratitude to Haas, Ferrari and FDA for allowing him this opportunity.
Explaining what he is aiming to achieve from the test, Shwartzman said: “This will be my first test with Haas F1 Team and I’m really looking forward to getting to know a new team, environment and also to learn as much as possible from them.
“Having the chance to drive for another F1 team is just incredible and I can’t wait to work with everyone.”
Haas Team Principal, Guenther Steiner meanwhile is “looking forward” to welcoming Shwartzman to the team after initially handing fellow FDA member – Callum Ilott his first F1 call-up in FP1 at 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, which unfortunately didn’t go ahead due to weather conditions.
Steiner also spoke highly of Shwartzman’s achievements so far, as he added; “His ability is clearly in evidence when you look at his performances over the last few seasons – most notably his rookie campaign in Formula 2 last year – competing against the likes of our own two drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.
“We are pleased to be able to give Robert an outing in a Formula 1 car and we look forward to working with him in Abu Dhabi.” concluded Steiner.
Shwartzman will now join a host of young drivers including Pato O’Ward and Liam Lawson in the test alongside further names which will be confirmed closer to the date of the test.
