Middlesbrough Sign Sol Bamba On Free Transfer

Middlesbrough have announced the signing of Sol Bamba on a free transfer from Cardiff City until June 2022.

Bamba’s arrival sees the former Ivory Coast defender reunited with Neil Warnock – who was in charge of Cardiff between October 2016 and November 2019, on a one year contract after having initially joined the club to work on his fitness levels after his release from Cardiff this summer.

Whilst focusing on building his fitness levels at Boro’s training ground – Rockliffe, Bamba helped with the youth teams by offering input of his past experiences which left the club impressed.

Upon confirmation of his one-year deal, Bamba took to Twitter to tweet of his joy at making the move to Teesside and start his coaching journey.

Warnock meanwhile explained that the 36 year-old had asked to come and train with the club which he didn’t hesitate to agree to, complimenting Bamba as he said: “He’s a great lad to have around.”

Bamba remained at Rockliffe whilst the first-team went on a pre-season training camp in Cornwall and was able to get involved in coaching the Under-23 and U18 squads, as well as continuing to build his fitness.

Upon his return from the South Coast, Warnock was stunned by Bamba’s “sharp” fitness after a battle against Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Warnock though iterated that Bamba’s priority is to continue his development, commenting: “At the moment the priority for him is to concentrate on his fitness and being in the squad, but we want him to be involved with the U23s as well.

The 72 year-old boss also is hopeful that Bamba’s presence will benefit the U23s and ultimately the first-team once ready, saying: “I feel he’s just the type of person we need to be involved with that age group.

“He has bags of experience and he will be a real asset for us both on and off the pitch.”

Bamba joins after netting ten goals in 118 appearances for Cardiff where he was part of Warnock’s promotion winning squad in 2017-18 season, only to suffer relegation from the Premier League the following campaign.
