Dennis Hauger Charges To Dramatic Wins at 2021 Austrian Race One

Dennis Hauger charged through the field from 12th on the grid to clinch victory in a dramatic 2021 Austrian Race One and extended his championship lead.

Hauger started this race in 12th following a reversal of top 12 in Qualifying and slowly rose up the order in a tight eight-car battle for the lead, finding himself third on lap 18 after passing Logan Sargeant before benefitting from a collision between Clement Novalak and Matteo Nannini on lap 21 to take victory.

Olli Caldwell finished second ahead of Sargeant as Victor Martins recovered from early errors to finish fourth ahead of Jak Crawford, Caio Collet, Jack Doohan, Nannini. Ayumu Iwasa and Aleksandr Smolyar.

Carlin’s Jonny Edgar meanwhile finished 12th to clinch reverse pole for the second race and will be joined on the front row by Enzo Fittipaldi of Charouz.

In the driver standings, Hauger initially extended his championship lead over Martins to 19 points after also taking the point for fastest lap with Doohan a further six points behind in third.

A series of post-race penalties however changed the classification with 11 drivers in total penalised for various incidents.

Caldwell and Sargeant received five second time penalties added to their race times for exceeding track limits which saw Caldwell retain second, whilst Sargeant lost his podium and dropped to 15th overall once all penalties were applied.

Victor Martins was also penalised 5s for the same reason but dropped one position from fourth to fifth.

Collet and Amaury Cordeel meanwhile both received 10s time penalties for leaving the same corner on five separate occasions, with Collet dropping from sixth to 17th whilst Cordeel only slipped from 21st to 22nd.

Matteo Nannini was slapped with a 30s time penalty for leaving Turns Nine and 10 on nine individual occasions, dropping the Italian from ninth to 23rd.

Filip Ugran also left the same corners but on one further occasion than Nannini managed throughout the race, so was too hit with a 30s time penalty which eventually left him 24th in the classification.

Crawford and Smolyar meanwhile both left the track and gained an advantage when battling each other, resulting in 5s time penalties for both drivers to drop them to eighth and 14th respectively.

Ayumu Iwasa meanwhile was disqualified after failing to pit when shown black and orange flag although no penalty points were issued, due to technical communication issues affecting Hitech GP which rendered Iwasa powerless in the incident due to a lack of communicational messaging from his team.

Novalak meanwhile was handed a grid penalty for race two after causing a collision with Nannini.

At the start, Nannini snatched the lead from Sargeant by squeezing the reverse pole-sitter to the outside of Turn One, with Caldwell briefly claiming third only for Novalak to pass him round the outside of Turn Three for third as Martins slipped to fifth.

Further errors on the edges of the gravel traps and sausage kerbs cost Martins a chance to push for victory despite finding himself seventh in an eight-car leading train, with Sargeant eventually forcing his way past on the inside of Turn Four to reclaim the lead on lap nine.

Nannini however snatched the position back a lap later with Novalak following through and claiming the lead into Turn Three on lap 11, only to lose out to Nannini and Sargeant on the run to Turn Four and slipped back to third as Arthur Leclerc ran wide with a puncture just behind the frontrunners at that corner.

Sargeant repassed Nannini on lap 12 but the Italian got back into the lead a lap later with outside move round Turn Four, whilst Leclerc retired in the pit lane due to damage from his puncture.

Lap 16 soon saw tyre life come into play as Sargeant again passed Nannini for the lead as he dived down the inside of Turn Four.

Hauger meanwhile slowly worked his way up the pack in the latter stages after finding himself sat in middle of the lead train for majority of race as he took Caldwell for fourth on lap 17, as Nannini and Novalak demoted Sargeant to third.

Sargeant then lost third to Hauger a lap later as Nannini and Novalak tussled for the lead with the latter winning out round the outside of Turn Four on lap 19 to take the lead, only for him to squeeze Nannini two laps later as the pair collided at that same corner.

Hauger consequently swept through to victory ahead of Caldwell and Sargeant as Nannini finished eighth, whilst Novalak retired with damage from the incident.
