Lewis Hamilton has officially signed a new two-year contract to race for Mercedes in 2022 and 23 Formula One seasons.

Since joining Mercedes in 2013, Hamilton has gone on to form part of F1’s most dominant teams in history with the Silver Arrows winning the last seven constructor titles and Hamilton secured six of his seven world titles in that time.

Speaking on his contract extension, Hamilton said: “It is hard to believe it’s been nearly nine years working with this incredible team and I’m excited we’re going to continue our partnership for two more years.”

The Brit also acknowledged that him and Mercedes have “accomplished so much together” but feels that there is more to achieve in coming seasons on and off the track, whilst praising the team for their support in the push ” to improve diversity and equality in our sport.”

On the challenge of a new technical regulation revamp in 2022, Hamilton commented: “We’re entering a new era of car which will be challenging and exciting and I can’t wait to see what else we can achieve together.”

Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff meanwhile described Hamilton as “no better driver” that he would have in the car due to the Brit’s exceptional record of achievements in F1 since arriving in 2007 with McLaren.

Wolff however noted that Hamilton is in a title fight this season with a current 18 point deficit to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, hence their decision to sign this new contract early to minimise any “distractions from the competition on track.”

As to Hamilton’s future beyond the two-year deal, Wolff has confirmed that he can continue racing as long as he continues to possess “the fire for racing.”

Non Executive Chairman, Markus Schafer meanwhile praised Hamilton’s “ambition and commitment” to pushing for victory and progress on track as well as his off-track qualities in the push to improve equality in society.

Details of Hamilton’s teammate for next season will be confirmed in due course with George Russell favourite to take the second seat, ahead of current teammate – Valtteri Bottas who could move on at end of season.
