Brentford ruthlessly stunned Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-0 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium to begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign in style.

Keane Lewis-Potter fired the Bees ahead from Mamadou Sangare’s 12th-minute pass after the latter had played an one-two with Dango Ouattara.

Vitaly Janelt doubled Brentford’s lead with a 33rd-minute rebound finish from Antonin Kinsky’s spillage of Mathias Jensen’s shot.

Kinsky was again at fault for Brentford’s third goal as he spilled Sangare’s scissor-kick strike for Michael Kayode to smash in on a close-range rebound, which secured the Bees’ first victory at home against Spurs since March 1948.

Brentford now sit joint-top of the table with Arsenal after the Gunners beat Coventry in the season-opener, whilst Tottenham are rock-bottom by virtue of alphabetical order below Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues.

Having spent £237m in this summer’s transfer window after escaping relegation on the final day of last season, Tottenham quickly found themselves second-best against Brentford’s fast-paced intense start, as Keane Lewis-Potter saw a fourth-minute strike blocked.

Nathan Collins then headed wide from a recycled cross just moments later as Keith Andrews’ Bees continued to apply early pressure.

Ouattara then headed wide from an eighth-minute corner, before Tottenham made their first proper attack two minutes later, yet Conor Gallagher rifled his shot high over the bar.

Spurs’ resistance was eventually broken in the 12th minute as summer signing, Sangare played a frantic one-two touch move with Ouattara up the inside right flank, before he calmly teed up Lewis-Potter unmarked to calmly fire the Bees in front past a helpless Kinsky.

Brentford continued to terrorise Spurs’ defence as Michael Kayode nodded wide from a free kick, before Ouattara smashed a 31st-minute volley into Kinsky.

That continued pressure was rewarded less than two minutes later as Jensen drove forward and unleashed a powerful shot, which Kinsky fumbled to the feet of Janelt who casually slotted away the rebound to double the Bees’ lead which they protected into half-time.

Any hope that Tottenham held of a second-half fightback were snuffed out deep in the 48th minute as a corner was nodded back from the left post by Collins towards Sangare, who hit a scissor-kick shot into Kinsky but the Czech goalkeeper’s spillage was smashed in by Kayode.

Matheus Fernandes and Mikey Moore attempted to spark life back into Tottenham but quick-fire shots were denied by Brentford’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

Spurs substitute, Rodrigo Bentancur however heaped further misery on his own team with a 53rd-minute shove on Kevin Schade, but his blushes were spared as Igor Thiago struck his penalty onto the left post despite Kinsky having dived the opposite direction.

Kelleher was soon back in action as he denied Spurs’ £100m summer signing, Sandro Tonali who unleashed a powerful 59th-minute strike towards the left corner, before Moore cut in from the right flank four minutes later but fired straight into the Irishman.

Brentford however looked comfortable in control and almost snatched a fourth goal in the 77th minute as Jaidon Anthony collected a pass up the right side of the box, but his cutback pass was flicked wide by Thiago at his near-right post.

Andrews’ Bees ultimately saw the game out to claim their first league victory at home over Tottenham in 78 years, having last beaten their North London visitors in March 1948 by a 2-0 result at their former home – Griffin Park.
