Arsenal began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City in the 2026-27 Premier League season-opener at Emirates Stadium, London.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a 15th-minute finish from Ricardo Calafiori’s deflected pass, before Bukayo Saka punished a deflective 23rd-minute touch from Carl Rushworth to double the Gunners’ lead.

The reigning champions completed their victory with a 49th-minute strike from Martin Odegaard deflected in by Rushworth’s left hand.

Odegaard post match spoke of his team’s ideal start to BBC’s Match of the Day as he felt that it was just the perfect tonic to begin their title defence.

“The perfect start. It’s always good to start with a win. A win at home, three goals and a clean sheet. It was really solid.”

With both teams having won the Premier League and Championship titles respectively last season, there was an immediate lively tempo from kick-off as Coventry’s Brandon Thomas-Asante forced Gabriel to block a cross just 20 seconds into the match.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners soon settled as new signing, Christos Tzolis put a shot wide then saw another shot blocked in the opening seven minutes, before Declan Rice blazed a ninth-minute shot over the bar.

Arsenal’s dominant control and intensity in possession eventually paid off in the 15th minute as Tzolis got into a scrap with Milan Van Ewijk, which saw the ball slipped across for Calafiori to tee up Havertz to hit a right-footed side-foot shot into the bottom right corner for the first goal of the Premier League season.

Coventry’s first experience of top-flight football in 25 years got even worse in the 23rd minute as goalkeeper, Rushworth spilled Tzolis’ cutback pass across the box into the path of Saka, which allowed the Englishman to calmly smash his left-footed shot into the left corner.

Arsenal subsequently controlled the remainder of the first half  to protect their lead into half time with little trouble, as Rice curled a shot wide of the left corner in the second minute of additional time.

Any hope that Coventry held of a dramatic second-half comeback was snuffed out just four minutes into the second half, as Odegaard slipped a pass through to Saka, who calmly slipped Ben White in behind to put a cutback pass across for Odegaard to fire in off the left hand of Rushworth.

Rushworth though prevented a fourth goal in the 52nd minute as he tipped Myles Lewis-Skelly’s shot over the bar.

Arsenal ultimately settled another three-goal victory after they beat Manchester City by the same result in the Community Shield last weekend, amidst David Raya’s 86th-minute save of Coventry substitute, Jack Rudoni’s header.

The result also meant that Arteta has achieved his 150th Premier League win in charge of Arsenal in his 249th league match at the helm in the Gunners’ dugout.
