Defender, Omar Sowunmi has been named as Bromley’s new club captain following Byron Webster’s retirement.
Webster left the club in May after their final game of the 2025-26 season which saw them beat Walsall to become League Two champions, before he then announced his retirement from football in late July – having captained the club to two promotions and 2022 FA Trophy during his spell as captain.
Manager, Andy Woodman subsequently has named Sowunmi as Webster’s successor ahead of their maiden League One fixture at Barnsley, having previously said on 7 August ahead of their Carabao Cup tie against Reading that he hadn’t decided on the captain for the new season.
“I still haven’t selected my captain for this season. I’ve got two conversations to have, but I know where I want to go with it. I just need to make sure that it’s all as it should be. I want a good captain like we had with Byron. Watch this space.”
Sowunmi consequently has been appointed in his fifth season at the club across two spells in total, having previously played alongside Webster between 2021-23 before he returned in summer 2024 and has since consolidated his status as a regular starter in the defence.
Woodman’s decision also is seen as a bold statement of intent and a commitment from Sowunmi who has scored 23 goals in 162 total appearances, amidst interest this summer from Scotland’s Dundee Football Club.
Forward, Michael Cheek meanwhile will be vice-captain this season.
