Roundup of the penultimate matchweek of the 2025-26 Sky Bet Championship season.
Four teams began the matchweek battling for the second automatic promotion spot but come the end of play, only three teams were left in the hunt heading into the final day split by two points.
Relegation meanwhile was sorted with a game to spare, whilst the play-off race will go to the final day after two of Wrexham, Hull and Derby tasted defeats.
Weekend
Second-half goals from Victor Torp and Ephron Mason-Clark saw Coventry celebrate their promotion with a 3-1 win at home to sixth-placed Wrexham, in which Brandon Thomas-Asante’s opener was cancelled out by an equaliser from Ollie Rathbone.
Ipswich stayed second despite having been held to a goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion, which guaranteed the Baggies’ survival.
Millwall missed the chance to go second after Macaulay Langstaff’s equaliser salvaged a 1-1 draw for the Lions at relegated Leicester City.
Middlesbrough benefitted from Southampton being in FA Cup action as they moved above the Saints into fourth with a 5-1 win at home to Watford, in which Morgan Whittaker and Tommy Conway netted braces and David Strelec also scored despite James Abankwah’s consolatory goal for the Hornets.
Hull missed a chance to move into the last play-off spot after they fell to a 2-1 loss at Charlton as Jayden Fevrier secured the Addicks’ survival, after Charlie Kelman’s opener for the hosts was cancelled out by John Egan’s header, with Oxford United relegated as a consequence before their own match kicked off.
Elsewhere, Sonder Langas’ header and Jaydon Banel’s finish kept Derby’s play-off hopes alive in a 3-2 comeback win at QPR, after Harvey Vale and Richard Kone twice put the Hoops in front either side of Oscar Fraulo’s equaliser.
Liam Lindsay’s brace and Lewis Dobbin’s finish saw Preston snatch a 3-2 win at Sheffield United despite Gustavo Hamer’s penalty and Patrick Bamford’s effort for the Blades.
Adrien Segecic’s hat-trick saw Portsmouth claim a 3-1 victory away at Stoke, as Lamine Cisse netted a 48th-minute consolatory goal which briefly reduced Stoke’s arrears.
Will Lankshear’s brace plus goals from Will Vaulks and Myles Peart-Harris saw Oxford Utd beat rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday at Kassam Stadium, as Will Grainger netted a consolatory goal for the Owls.
Phil Neumann’s volley and Jhon Solis’ finish saw Birmingham City beat Bristol City 2-1 at St Andrew’s Stadium, although Tomi Horvat’s penalty proved consolatory for Roy Hodgson’s Robins.
Kenny McLean’s penalty cancelled out Zan Vipotnik’s penalty as Norwich fought back for a 1-1 draw at home to Swansea.
Midweek
Ipswich put promotion in their own hands on the final day after Jack Clarke’s late strike rescued them a 2-2 draw at Southampton, having initially led through Wes Burn’s opening finish before Ryan Manning and Cyle Larin put the Saints in front.
