Alessia Russo felt that England made “tough” work of their 1-0 victory away to Iceland in their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier.

Russo netted the Lionesses’ 21st-minute winner in Reykjavik from Lauren Hemp’s pass but Iceland gave them several second-half scares, which forced Hannah Hampton to make crucial saves to seal England’s victory in their 500th international fixture.

“It was tough, a game of two halves,” reflected Russo as she admitted that the team must learn from that second-half performance, but she feels that the result puts automatic qualification in their own hands as they face Spain in Mallorca on Friday 5 June.

“There were moments in the second half that we will reflect on and learn from but ultimately, we needed three points and this holds us in good stead going into the next camp.

“It was tough, they made it difficult but we are pleased to get three points.”

Russo also spoke of her pride at Hampton’s performance as she praised the 25-year old goalkeeper for her saves which ensured that England sit three points clear of Spain at the summit of their group.

“She was amazing, I just spoke out there and said that big moments kept us in it,” commented Russo on Hampton’s impact and ability to step up to spare the defence’s blushes.

“She made some big saves and sometimes you need someone to step up like that.”
