England Women’s Hannah Hampton, Chloe Kelly and F1 champion, Lando Norris have headlined the shortlist for 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Hampton’s nomination comes amidst a successful 2025 for the 25-year-old goalkeeper as she helped Chelsea achieve the domestic treble last season, before she was part of the first England senior team to win a title on foreign soil at the UEFA Women’s Euro in Switzerland.
Her performances also earned her the 2024-25 WSL Golden Glove award plus the first-ever female Yashin Trophy and tenth place in the Ballon d’Or list despite being the sole goalkeeper to make the 30-player shortlist.
Hampton however faces competition from her fellow Lioness, Chloe Kelly who helped Arsenal to the UEFA Women’s Champions League title in May, before she went on to star as an impact substitute with two assists and one goal at the Women’s Euro.
Norris claimed his maiden F1 title in a tense three-way title decider with a third-placed finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, which proved enough for the 26 year-old to end Max Verstappen’s four-year reign by just two points.
The Brit claimed seven victories en-route to his maiden crown which started with victory at a wet season-opener in Australia, before he proceeded to win in Monaco and his home race – British Grand Prix at Silverstone, amidst victories in Austria, Hungary, Mexico and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Norris also achieved sprint wins in Miami and Sao Paulo which ultimately helped him become the 11th different British F1 champion, and the 35th individual driver to claim a F1 title in the sport’s 75-year history.
Golfer, Rory McIlroy is considered a contender after he completed the career grand slam with a dramatic play-off victory over England’s Justin Rose at the Masters, before the pair helped Europe defend the Ryder Cup and claim a first overall victory on American soil since 2012.
Ellie Kildunne is also in contention after she scored five tries to help England win the Women’s Rugby World Cup on home soil, which was sealed with a 33-13 comeback demolition of Canada in the final at Twickenham Stadium in which she got their first try.
Luke Littler has been nominated after he won the World PDC Darts Championship at 17 years-old, before he went on to claim five further titles including; UK Open, World Grand Prix Darts, World Matchplay, Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Final once he turned 18 years-old.
England Women footballer, Michelle Agyemang has been nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year after she scored crucial equalisers in comeback victories against Sweden and Italy in Quarter and Semi-Finals respectively at the Euro this summer in her first major tournament.
Agyemang however faces competition from Littler and Cricket’s Davina Perrin who achieved 101 innings in 43 balls in a semi-final victory over London Spirit to help Northern Superchargers reach Hundred Women’s Final, where they beat Southern Brave to win the title.
England Lionesses and Red Roses are favourites for the Team of the Year gong which will be decided by public vote for the first time, following their success at Women’s Euro and Rugby World Cup respectively, although the shortlist for that category is yet to be announced.
Arsenal Women’s Mariona Caldentey headlines the World Sports Star shortlist after she helped the Gunners to a surprise UEFA Women’s Champions League title against her former team – Barcelona, and also scored 19 goals and created nine assists in her first season at the club and was runners-up with Spain at Women’s Euro.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah however is considered favourite after he scored 34 goals and created 23 assists in all competitions last season, as Liverpool won the Premier League title and finished runners-up to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.
Boxer, Terence Crawford, Athletics’ Armand Duplantis, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Baseball star – Shohei Ohtani round out the World Sport Star nominations, with voting in that category now open on BBC Sport website until Sunday 14 December.
The ceremony will take place at MediaCityUK, Salford on Thursday 18 December and will be broadcast live on BBC One in the UK between 7-9pm GMT.
Winners of Helen Rollason Award, Coach of the Year, Unsung Hero of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards will be unveiled on the night.
