McLaren’s Lando Norris benefitted from a well-timed safety car to snatch victory from Oscar Piastri in 2025 Miami Sprint.
Norris benefitted from a safety car deployment on Lap 15 following a crash for Fernando Alonso to snatch victory from Piastri, who had pitted a lap earlier for slicks in a wet-to-dry sprint.
Lewis Hamilton passed Max Verstappen on Lap 14 to finish third ahead of Alex Albon, George Russell, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman.
Albon, Lawson and Bearman however received post-race time penalties which dropped them out of the points as Russell and Stroll were promoted to fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda, Antonelli and Gasly who rounded out the top eight finishers.
In the drivers’ standings, Piastri’s lead over Norris was trimmed to just nine points.

Heavy rain showers in the build-up to the sprint left the track wet which caught Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc out and caused the race to start behind the safety car for the formation lap, although it stayed out for the first racing lap before the red flag was thrown for 23 minutes due worsening track conditions.
After another lap behind the safety car, racing eventually commenced on Lap 3 with a standing start but Antonelli got a slow getaway which allowed Piastri to get alongside him directly into Turn 1, and the Italian ran wide to concede the lead to Piastri.
Norris and Verstappen also got ahead of Antonelli as he re-joined the circuit whilst Russell held fifth from Hamilton and Albon, but Alonso was able to jump Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar for eighth and the Frenchman’s teammate, Liam Lawson followed him through.
The race soon settled down as Piastri built a circa two-second lead over Norris whilst the track began to dry out.
Red Bull’s Tsunoda was the first driver to gamble on a pit stop for slick tyres on Lap 11 with a switch from intermediate tyres to the medium tyre, which soon triggered a steady chain-reaction in the following laps.
Up front, Norris managed to get within DRS range of Piastri by the end of Lap 12 but Williams’ Carlos Sainz hit the wall on that very lap, which caused debris to be strewn across the track.
McLaren reacted by pitting Piastri at the end of Lap 13 whilst Norris had to wait until the end of Lap 14 to make his stop, yet luck swung his way during his stop as the safety car was deployed after a crash for Alonso, which gave him the lead from Piastri and Hamilton who had passed Verstappen on that same lap.
Verstappen however collided with Antonelli in the pit lane during their stops on Lap 12 which left him with damage to his front end, whilst stewards slapped him with a ten-second time penalty for his irresponsibility to drop him out of the points at the checkered flag.
The safety car ultimately stayed out to the checkered flag which meant that Norris took victory and cut his title deficit to Piastri slightly to nine points.
Albon post-race was handed a five-second time penalty for driving too slowly behind the safety car which dropped him to 11th, whilst Lawson fell to 13th with the same time penalty after stewards held him at fault for Alonso’s crash.
Bearman fell from eighth to 14th in the classification after he was found to had been unsafely released into the path of Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg when he pitted.
