McLaren’s Lando Norris dominated 2025 Austrian Grand Prix to cut his title deficit to Oscar Piastri.

Norris dominated the race amidst intense pressure from Piastri in opening and closing laps of the race to cut his title deficit over his teammate and title rival.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third from Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Liam Lawson.

Fernando Alonso held off Gabriel Bortoleto for seventh as the rookie recorded his first F1 top-ten finish in eighth position, ahead of his Sauber teammate, Nico Hulkenberg in the team’s first double top-ten finish since 2023 Mexico City GP.

Haas’ Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten ahead of Oliver Bearman with everyone from Alonso to Franco Colapinto lapped once, whilst Yuki Tsunoda was lapped twice.

In the drivers’ standings, Piastri’s title lead over Norris was reduced to 15 points heading into Norris’ home race at Silverstone.

Ahead of the start, Carlos Sainz failed to get off the starting grid on the formation lap after his Williams failed to engage gear which forced an aborted start once everyone else returned to the grid.

Sainz however was able to get going after a bump start and retreated to the pit lane as is protocol for causing an aborted start, but his power unit caught ablaze which curtailed any hope of him officially starting the race due to the damage caused to his car.

At lights out after a 13-minute delay, Norris got a clean start to cut off Leclerc which allowed Piastri to sweep through into second ahead of the Monegasque, whilst Russell passed Hamilton for fourth but his former teammate repassed him into turn six.

The safety car however came out shortly afterwards owing to a collision at turn 3 as Antonelli swerved to avoid an early-braking Bortoleto, which sent the Italian across the inside kerb into Verstappen who suffered his first non-mechanical related retirement since 2021 Italian GP.

Racing resumed at the end of lap 3 with Norris and Piastri free to race each other which saw the Aussie pass Norris round the outside of turn 3 on lap 11, but the Brit got the switchback and retook the lead into turn 4.

Piastri managed to keep Norris within DRS range thereafter but McLaren were handed an almighty scare on lap 20 as Piastri locked up on the inside of turn 4, which saw him almost slide into Norris and earned himself a reprimand from the pit wall.

Norris subsequently made his first stop at the end of that very lap and Piastri followed suit four laps later but re-joined 5.7 seconds behind his teammate after both drivers suffered a slow front-left tyre change.

Piastri managed to reduce his deficit to Norris to around three seconds after Leclerc pitted as both McLaren drivers battled traffic ahead, until Norris made his second stop on lap 53 with Piastri following suit a lap later.

Piastri rejoined 3.7s behind his title rival but as he tried to lap Colapinto, the Argentinean punted him onto the grass which earned the Alpine driver a ten-second time penalty, which Yuki Tsunoda received after he spun Colapinto at turn 4 on lap 30.

A tense finish eventually unfolded as Piastri reeled Norris in to under two seconds but traffic soon proved challenging for both drivers to navigate, as Norris ultimately clung on for his third victory of the season and cut his title deficit to Piastri to 12 points.

Norris’ win also marked McLaren’s first victory in Austria since David Coulthard took the checkered flag in 2001, as well as the first time that two Brits have won the Austrian GP in consecutive years.

F1 now heads to Silverstone for the British GP from 4-6 July as Norris continues his title charge at his and McLaren’s home race, whilst Hamilton makes his first home appearance as a Ferrari driver and Russell plus Bearman look to impressive on their own turf.
