Defender, Piero Hincapie has completed a season-long loan move to Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen with obligation to buy.
Hincapie’s move came after he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season with three goals in 45 appearances for Leverkusen.
Arsenal have paid an initial £5.2m loan fee but will have an obligatory £39.9m buy clause should certain conditions be triggered during his loan stint, with the 23-year-old having already agreed a five-year contract until June 2031 which will be activated next summer if the move becomes permanent.
Manager, Mikel Arteta is “so pleased” to sign Hincapie who he believes can add extra “versatility and tactical flexibility” to his team.
“Piero has a real physical presence, with his versatility and tactical flexibility giving us strong added defensive options. He is a big character, with a very good combination of both youth and maturity. He will make our squad stronger and more competitive as we continue into this season.”
Hincapie began his senior career at Independiente del Valle in August 2019 after he had joined their youth academy in 2016, and only made three senior appearances before he moved to Argentina’s Talleres which saw him make just 22 appearances.
August 2021 saw Hincapie signed by Leverkusen and he immediately became a first-team regular with two goals in his first season.
Hincapie eventually scored seven goals in 166 appearances across a four-year stint in which they achieved Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2023-24 season, plus the DFL-Supercup at the start of last season.
