Dutch defender, Lutsharel Geertruida has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan with option to buy next summer.

Geertruida spent last season at RB Leipzig with just one goal in 35 appearances but the 25-year-old defender has now made a season-long move to Sunderland for £2.5m, albeit with an optional £18m buy option for the 6ft 1in defender.

The 25-year-old spoke of his desire to play in the Premier League in his first interview with safc.com and is “excited” have that opportunity.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League, and I’m so excited now that my opportunity is here. We are new to the league, so we need to fight, and I want to be a part of that.

“I’ve seen the recent games and think the group looks fresh and energetic. Now, I just want to be as important as possible for this Club. I’m ready, and I can’t wait to see the fans in the stadium.”

Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are delighted that Lutsharel has joined us for the 2025-26 season.

“He was extremely motivated by our proposal from the very beginning, and the opportunity to bring such a high-calibre player to the Club on loan was a perfect fit for us. Competition for his signature was high, but the combination of our Club, city, and fan base ultimately made the difference.”

Geertruida began his career at Overmaas Rotterdam before spells at Spartaan #20 and and Sparta Rotterdam before he moved to Feyenoord in 2012, and made his senior debut in October 2017 as a substitute in a 4-1 second-round victory at home to AVV Swift in the KNVB Cup.

He subsequently spent seven full seasons and made four appearances at the start of last season for Feyenoord, during which he produced 23 goals in 202 total appearances across which he played at right-back, centre-back and as a defensive midfielder.

Across his time at Feyenoord, Geertruida helped them win 2022-23 Eredivisie title plus two KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield titles apiece.
