Newcastle United have signed German forward, Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart for £69m.
Woltemade had been heavily linked to Bayern Munich throughout the summer following six goals in five matches for Germany at UEFA Under-21 Euro 2025 in June, but Bayern weren’t able to agree terms with Stuttgart for the 23-year-old.
Newcastle subsequently swooped in with a £69m offer for Woltemade to progress their forward recruitment after massive misses with Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who instead signed for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.
Stuttgart accepted the bid which consisted of an £65m fixed fee plus £4m in add-ons totalling £69m, with Woltemade happy to make the move on a five-year contract until June 2030 which has seen him depart Stuttgart with 17 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.
Woltemade will wear the number 27 shirt and is now keen to take the first step in his career outside of his home country.
“I’m really happy to be at this amazing club. From the first contact, I felt like the club really wanted me and had big plans for me.
“It’s a big step in my life to leave Germany but everybody has welcomed me so well and it already feels like family. I have a really good feeling from speaking to the head coach that this is the right place for me to find my best level.
“I know the stadium from watching games on television – it looks amazing and I know the atmosphere is crazy. I’m really excited to play and start scoring goals here.”
Howe added that he is “delighted” to have quickly brought in a new striker amidst rumours over Alexander Isak’s future.
“He fits the profile for exactly what we have been looking to add to our attacking options.
“He’s strong in a lot of areas – he has great technical ability and has proven himself to be a real threat in one of Europe’s top leagues – but he’s also still at an age where he has plenty of room to develop and grow here.
“Nick is a great character too and we’re really pleased to welcome him to the group.”
Woltemade began his career at TS Woltmershausen before he moved to Werder Bremen where he graduated through their youth academy to make his senior debut in February 2020 in a 2-1 away Bundesliga loss to FC Augsburg.
He went on to score just twice in 51 appearances for Werder Bremen and spent 2022-23 season on loan at SV Elversberg, which proved successful with 17 goals in 35 appearances.
Woltemade moved to Stuttgart last summer in a move which saw him rediscover the spark that he had at Elversberg as he netted 17 goals in 33 appearances last season, which was followed up by a single appearance this season amidst rumours over his future.
