Huddersfield have signed forward, Alfie May from Birmingham City in a £1.2m transfer.
May joined the Blues from Charlton last summer and went on to score 17 goals and contribute nine assists in 57 appearances across all competitions, as Birmingham won instant automatic promotion back to the Championship as League One champions.
The 32-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Terriers until June 2028 and is excited to finally complete the move, having previously seen potential moves to Huddersfield fall short.
“It’s no secret that this is a Club that I’ve come close to joining in the past, and I’m really pleased the opportunity has come again to become a Town player.
“This is a huge Club with massive ambition, and that’s all any player wants to feel a part of. I was in a team last season that felt similarly, so I know what’s possible when a squad clicks with a Manager and there’s a positive feeling across the whole Club, and that’s something I recognise here.”
May also vowed to knuckle down and try to deliver the goals to help Huddersfield get promotion back to the Championship.
“My job is to work as hard as possible and score goals, and I’ll do everything in my power to repay the faith the Club has shown in me. Lee Grant is an exciting Manager and the way he wants to play and attack feels like the right fit for me, so I can’t wait to get going.”
Grant added that May “is a natural goalscorer with a formidable record in recent years, so we’re really pleased to bring him into the group ahead of the new season kicking off.”
The manager also praised May’s attitude and personality which he believes are signs of successful strikers with the skillset to stand out from his competitors within the forward unit.
“He has a strong mentality, an infectious personality and is full of belief, and those are the hallmarks of all successful strikers.
“His skillset is different to what we already have in the squad and he compliments the players that he’ll be featuring alongside well, so we look forward to having the opportunity to get straight down to work with him this week.”
“Alfie is another player we’ve introduced to the squad this summer that knows what’s required to be successful at the right end of this division, and that experience will be invaluable across the course of the season.”
May began his career in Non League football with Billericay Town before he went on to represent Chatham Town, VCD Athletic, Erith & Belvedere plus Farnborough and Hythe Town.
January 2017 saw May turn professional with Doncaster Rovers with whom he scored 23 goals in 117 appearances in two-and-a-half years and helped the Donnies claim promotion to League One in his first season at the club.
He subsequently managed 67 goals in 165 appearances at Cheltenham between January 2020 – May 2023, during which they won promotion to League One at the end of 2020-21 season, only to be relegated back down again a year later.
May spent 2023-24 season at Charlton Athletic where he netted 27 goals in 50 appearances as the Addicks only managed a 16th-placed finish in the third-tier, which saw him secure a successful one-season spell at Birmingham last season.
