Red Bull Racing advisor, Helmut Marko has paid tribute to Christian Horner for his “outstanding achievements” in the wake of his sacking.
Horner yesterday (9 July) was sacked by Red Bull following a difficult season in which the team sat fourth in the constructors’ standings with just two wins, whilst Max Verstappen title defence looks over as he sits 69 points behind championship leader – Oscar Piastri.
Laurent Mekies has replaced Horner as CEO and Team Principal but Red Bull have now issued a public statement from Marko about the change of leadership, in which the 82-year-old reflected fondly on his close relationship with Horner.
“Christian and I have worked together very successfully for over 20 years – both in Formula 1 and in Formula 3000. I would like to sincerely thank Christian for that.”
Marko proceeded to speak proudly of their success at Red Bull which saw the pair develop two four-time world champions in Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen respectively, plus win six constructor titles and helped four drivers claim their maiden F1 victories with the team.
Pierre Gasly however won for the sister team at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix following his demotion from Red Bull a year earlier in 2019, whilst Sergio Perez claimed five of his F1 total wins with the Austrian constructor.
“During this time, we were able to celebrate an incredible number of outstanding achievements. We helped developed two World Drivers’ Champions and several Grand Prix winners. That has always been – and still is – the Red Bull way.”
Marko however has refused to rule out Verstappen claiming a fifth title this season despite the Dutchman’s difficult points deficit.
“As for the current sporting situation: there are still twelve races to go, and we will continue to fight for the Drivers’ Championship as long as it’s mathematically possible.”
