Italy meet Spain in a crucial top of Group B decider at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
A draw would be enough for Italy to qualify for the Quarter-Finals but victory would see them advance as Group B winners.
Spain just need to avoid defeat to secure their progress into the last eight as Group B winners, having already secured their knockout spot.
Team News
Italy have no fresh injury concerns to report with manager, Andrea Soncin expected to name an unchanged line-up from the team which drew 1-1 against Portugal.
Spain also have no fresh injury concerns but manager, Montse Tome is expected to rotate her squad with Aitana Bonmati set to start, having made a substitute appearance in their 6-2 win over Belgium.
Ona Batlle and Laia Aleixandri are expected to be rested, due to the pair being one booking away from suspension for the Quarter-Finals.
When is Kick-Off?
Italy meet Spain at Stadion Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland, on Friday 11 July at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Italy won their only previous meeting against Spain at UEFA Women’s Euro (W1), which came in the semi-finals of 1997 edition.
- Spain are chasing a first victory over Italy at UEFA Women’s Euro Finals.
- Cristiana Girelli has scored three goals in two of Italy’s last three matches in all competitions (W2, D1).
- Six of Spain’s 11 goals so far in this group have been scored by Esther Gonzalez and Alexia Putellas – who have both scored three goals each in two appearances.
Prediction
Although Italy will feel frustrated by their late draw against Portugal, they still have their destiny in their own hands so it is imperative that they start well and ideally try to get in front if can counter in the same way that Belgium managed to trouble Spain.
Tome’s world champions though look unstoppable even amidst rotation such is their depth and quality so if Batlle and Aleixandri are rested, it isn’t likely to have much impact other than in terms of attacking opportunities up the right flank without Batlle to overlap.
I however just can’t see Italy having enough to stop Spain but expect a tough battle.
Prediction: Italy 1-3 Spain
Result: Italy 1-3 Spain
